Evan Longoria Could Replace Chipper Jones In WBC

Yesterday, it was announced that Chipper Jones will miss the rest of the World Baseball Classic with muscle strain. Much like with Dustin Pedroia and his oblique injury, the team must now replace Jones. According to a conversation between Longoria and team USA manager Davey Johnson, Longoria could be that replacement.

“I talked to Davey Johnson right before the thing started and he said if they needed somebody I would be the first in line,” Longoria said this afternoon. “If it happens, it happens – I’ll be ready to go. I’d be happy to go.”--RaysReport

As of right now there hasn't been an invitation, but Longoria, who was on the provisional USA roster, would make sense as a replacement. The United States plays tomorrow night in Miami against the loser of tonight's match up between Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

More to come....

Update:(H/T to Tyler for this info.)  Chipper Jones cannot be replaced in this round of play. The USA would have to advance to the next round before Longoria could be added to the roster.
