22 pitches, two innings, two hits, two strikeouts, and a wild pitch that lead to an earned run wrapped James Shields first appearance this spring. Shields faced a Boston lineup featuring Jacoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie, Brad Wilkerson, and Josh Bard. Hardly the best Boston will offer, but given the mass participation in the World Baseball Classic, there's not much left in Boston's camp.
Brian Shouse relieved Shields and was followed by Grant Balfour who promptly took a line drive off of his right arm. There's apparently no injury concern for Balfour minus a bruise.
