According to Baseball America's Jim Callis, the Rays signed their fifth round pick today:
Rays sign 5th-rder Ian Kendall for $250,000, equivalent of early-4th-rd money.
So far, the Rays have signed Kendall and first-round pick Justin O'Connor, both for slightly more than would be expected for players in their slots. The Rays have also signed their second-round pick, Derek Dietrich, but still have first-rounders Josh Sale and Drew Vettleson out there unsigned.
Here's what we had to say about Kendall when he was drafted:
Round 5, 161st Overall - Ian Kendall, RHP Ashland HS (OR)
Not much is known about Kendall, but given his geographic location, the Pacific North West, you can bet Kirsch [NW scout] did his homework. Kendall possesses a plus fastball that already reaches 95 mph. Of course, his secondary pitches will be key in the development process. He's from a small town - hopefully Kirsch has found a hidden gem.
