Report: Rays One of Several Teams Scouting Roy Oswalt

Per Brian McTaggart:

Teams with scouts here watching Oswalt: Dodgers, Phillies, Rays and Mets.

I don't see how Roy Oswalt makes sense for the Rays. I included him in the "Not Interested" section of the DRB Trade Deadline Handbook, and I highly doubt that the Rays end up making a serious bid for him. He's too expensive for too long (owed $16M each of the next two seasons), he's on the wrong side of 30, he's not AL proven, and he's not as dominant as Cliff Lee. He'd be an upgrade over Wade Davis, sure, but he'd also be a very big long-term investment.

Here's what I had to say about Oswalt in the Handbook:

Rest of Season Salary: $7.5M

Rest of Season Projection: 3.54 FIP, 117 IP

Contract Status: Owed $16M in 2011; $16M club option for 2012.

Notes: He's still a great pitcher, although his numbers have slipped slightly due to aging. The Astrosshould want to unload him if possible and get some prospects in return, but that contract knocks the Rays out of the bidding. Paying a pitcher $16M next season? No thank you.
