Down on the farm April 24: Luke Scott back on the field

Montgomery was supposed to be facing an old friend, Matt Garza, this afternoon, but he was scratched from the rehab appearance with a dead arm.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (13-6)

Cole Figueroa's RBI double tied the game in the ninth, setting the stage for an 11th walkoff 4-3 win by the Bulls. With the bases loaded and no outs in the 11th, Tim Beckham failed to get the run home, grounding out to second. Rich Thompson followed with a strikeout, but Jason Bourgeois came through with a single to score Brandon Guyer who led off the inning with a double. Despite a couple early home runs including one by top Tigers prospect Nick Castellanos, Durham's pitching staff pitched pretty well. J.D. Martin allowed two runs in six innings, and both Steve Geltz and Kirby Yates struck out four batters in two innings of relief. Wil Myers reached base three more times including his third double of the year, but he also struck out twice. Chris Gimenez had three hits including a double and also walked.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (10-9)

Down 4-1 in the ninth, Montgomery scored three runs to rally and beat Tennessee 4-3. Against Cubs' prospect Trey McNutt, back to back doubles by Mikie Mahtook and Cameron Seitzer followed a leadoff walk by Robby Price to tie the game before an out was even recorded. A Riccio Torrez single two batters later gave Montgomery the lead that C.J. Riefenhauser protected for his second save of the year. Enny Romero was solid despite control issues, allowing one run in five innings with six strikeouts and only two walks. Only 58% of his pitches were strikes, but over his last two starts, he has 13 strikeouts to just three walks, not particularly common for Romero. A day before Matt Garza was supposed to rehab against Montgomery, Zach Rosscup, also traded to the Cubs in the same deal, struck out three against the Biscuits in a scoreless inning.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (8-11)

Luke Scott's rehab appearance proved to be the difference in Charlotte's 3-2 win over St. Lucie. Up 2-1 with two outs in the eighth, Scott came to the plate and delivered a single to score Kes Carter which proved to be the winning run. Batting third as Charlotte's DH, Scott was 1/4 with that RBI and a pair of strikeouts. Finally getting some run support, the Stone Crabs pitching staff dominated again. Roberto Gomez struck out five and walked just one, allowing an unearned run in six innings. He was followed up by Austin Hubbard who dominated as Charlotte took the lead. Hubbard struck out four in two innings, only facing one batter over the minimum due to a catching error following a wild third strike. Kyeong Kang hit his first home run in his return to Charlotte.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (14-4)

Bowling Green scored in all eight innings they batted in to earn a 12-6 win over Ft. Wayne Tuesday afternoon. The relentless offense trailed just once during the game, after the top of the second, and every player contributed. Six of their 12 hits went for extra bases, and five players combined to steal eight bases without being caught. Thomas Coyle hit his first home run of the season in the second inning to tie the game at two, and he walked in three other plate appearances and scored four runs. Once again though, the duo of Tyler Goeddel and Andrew Toles offered much of the production. They combined for five hits, including a pair of extra base hits for Goeddel, and Toles stole three bases. With all the run support, Jeff Ames pitched okay, striking out two and walking none while allowing three runs in five innings. Nick Sawyer struck out four and allowed an unearned run in two innings.
