Down On The Farm: April 6

A recap of the minor league action.

Elsa

All four teams played yesterday. Wil Myers and Hak-Ju Lee made their AAA debuts while Blake Snell ran into some trouble in Bowling Green.

AAA Durham Bulls (1-0)

In their first game of the 2013 season, the Durham Bulls pummeled Norfolk by the score of 11-2. The top prospects for the Bulls shined in their season debuts. Chris Archer pitched five frames, giving up 1 run with 1 walk, 5 Ks, and 3 hits. Yates allowed the second run, while Inman finished the blowout. On the offensive side, the Bulls compiled 13 hits. Thompson, Guyer, Anderson, Gimenez, and Lee all had 2 hits. Wil Myers, the top prospect in the Rays system, finished 1-4 with a 2B.

AA Montgomery Biscuits (1-1)

A strong all around pitching performance guided the Montgomery Biscuits to their first win of the season. Albert Suarez made the start, pitching 5 very strong innings, the only blemish being an unearned run. Marquis Fleming and Adam Liberatore both pitched two scoreless innings apiece to seal the victory. Despite getting 9 hits and three walks, the Biscoits were unable to put many runs on the board. After scoring a run in the fifth on a wild pitch, Todd Glaesmann scored on a Kevin Kiermaier triple in the sixth to put Montgomery ahead for good.

A+ Charlotte Stone Crabs (0-2)

After a rain-out on Thursday, the Stone Crabs played a doubleheader yesterday. Hopes of winning their first game of the year ended quickly for the Stone Crabs when Felipe Rivero allowed 4 runs in 1.2 innings. Suero and Hubbard allowed the other 4 runs. Jake Hager went 1-3 with a double in his A+ debut, while DH Segovia led the team with 2 hits. The final score was 8-2.

In the second game, Port Charlotte lost to Palm Beach 3-1. Parker Markel allowed 3 runs in his 6 innings, with a 4/1 K/BB. Ryan Carpenter pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Only four players got hits (4 hits total), with both Jake Hager and Drew Vettleson going 1-3 with a double.

A Bowling Green Hot Rods (1-1)

It was a close game between Bowling Green and South Bend until the Silver Hawks blew the game open in the eighth inning. Blake Snell struggled mightily, going only 2.2 innings with 2 hits, 3 ER, 6(!) BBs, and 4 Ks. Nick Sawyer was touched for three runs in relief. Joey Rickard and Ryan Dunn both hit doubles for the Hot Rods.

Star of the Day: Chris Archer had a very nice start for Durham.

Goat of the Day: 6 walks in 2.2 innings is very disappointing from top prospect Blake Snell.
