The Rays Tank: That game.

If you thought the game was going to be a blowout after the first inning, you were very wrong.

Last night's 10-8 Rays loss against the Red Sox required a lengthy recap from Danny to cover all 14 innings of action. it wasn't just an extra innings ball game -- it was one of the best games we've seen from this team all season.

Here's an attempt of a cliff notes version:

First inning: Alex Cobb gives up six runs to the Red Sox before getting an out. Rays score two via solo homers from Matt Joyce and Evan Longoria. Rays 2, Red Sox 6.

Second inning: Scoreless from both teams, with an at-bat where Joyce sees a 3-0 count from John Lackey and launches a massive foul ball that would've been quite the homer had it stayed fair. Joyce initially drops his bat as if it had remained fair -- this'll be brought up later.

On his way off the field it's apparent that Lackey yells at the Rays dugout, and post the commercial break we seeSean Rodriguez yelling right back. Rays 2, Red Sox 6.

Third inning: Cobb settles in nicely with a 1-2-3 inning, Rays tack on another run. Rays 3, Red Sox 6.

Fourth inning: The Rays offense continues to work towards a comeback, leading off the inning with back-to-back singles from Jose Lobaton and Yunel Escobar. They add another run. Rays 4, Red Sox 6.

Fifth inning: Cobb is pulled after four and replaced with Alex Torres, who continues to dominate, striking out David Ortiz, Daniel Nava, and after allowing a single to Mike Carp, Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Rays 4, Red Sox 6.

Sixth inning: Another scoreless appearance from Torres. With two outs in the Rays half of the sixth, Lackey drills Joyce in the back, quite deliberately, though Lackey attempts to act like it was unintentional. Joyce clearly mouths, "That's bull****" as he walks toward first base, and the benches clear. No punches are thrown, warnings are issued and Ben Zobrist singles to right, taking a heated Joyce to third, where he muttered angrily the entire time.

Red Sox lift Lackey, bringing in Craig Breslow, and Kelly Johnson strands both Joyce and Zobrist. Rays 4, Red Sox 6.

Seventh inning: Joel Peralta comes on for a scoreless inning, and the Red Sox bring in Andrew Miller, who gives up a solo homer to James Loney. Luke Scott sends a shot to the warning track in right field, and though Shane Victorinogets the out, he decides to yell at some Rays fans after doing so. How nice!

Miller is replaced with Junichi Tazawa, who ends the inning, but the Rays make the lead a little smaller. Rays 5, Red Sox 6.

Eighth inning: On 16 pitches, Jake McGee retires the Red Sox side 1-2-3. Tazawa stays in to pitch, and following a groundout by Lobaton, Escobar gets a standing double. Joyce grounds out to advance the runner, Zobrist works a 2-1 count and Tazawa then throws a wild pitch to the backstop -- allowing Escobar to come home and score, tying up the game.

Zobrist follows with a double, and Johnson then pops way up, causing Dustin Pedroia to pull a feet-first catch on the mound. Rays 6, Red Sox 6.

Ninth inning: Fernando Rodney enters for a dominant 1-2-3 inning. As Danny said in the recap, vintage Rodney. Rays go scoreless in the bottom of the inning. On to extras - Rays 6, Red Sox 6.

10th inning: Maddon brings Rodney on for another inning, but Rodney of the ninth was not Rodney of the 10th, as he led off the inning walking Pedroia on four pitches. Ortiz hits into a fielder's choice, advancing the runner, and on a full count to Daniel Nava Pedroia steals third; Nava walks. Rodney gets Carp out, but Saltalamacchia laces a hit into shallow center to score both Pedroia and Nava, and give the Red Sox the lead.

Andrew Bailey enters to close, and leads off the inning by giving up a solo homer to Lobaton. Bailey then loads the bases via a walk to Escobar, walk to Joyce and a single from Zobrist. With no outs, Johnson works a full count and Bailey walks in the tying run.

With the bases still loaded, Longoria has a weak at-bat that results in a double play, and Sam Fuld grounds out. Extras continue - Rays 8, Red Sox 8.

11th inning: Jamey Wright enters the game, striking out Stephen Drew, walking Ellsbury and popping out Victorino. Kyle Farnsworth enters, Ellsbury steals second and third without question, then Farnsworth strikes out Pedroia.

The Rays go down 1-2-3 against Koji Uehara in the bottom of the frame. Rays 8, Red Sox 8.

12th inning: Joe Maddon led off the inning by annoying Red Sox manager John Farrell after chatting with the home plate ump to give Cesar Ramos, who had worked the previous day, additional time to warm up. Sorry we're not sorry, Farrell. Note, Farnsworth only faced one batter in the 11th, and it's later revealed this was due to right arm soreness.

Ramos gets the Red Sox 1-2-3, and the Rays follow suit in the bottom of the inning. Still tied - Rays 8, Red Sox 8.

13th inning: Saltalamacchia hits a lead off single off Ramos, but Ramos gets out of the inning scoreless, and on only 21 pitches for his appearance.

The Red Sox bring in Wednesday's starting pitcher, Franklin Morales, to face the Rays, and he holds the team to zero runs. On to the 14th - Rays 8, Red Sox 8.

14th inning: Ramos begins his third inning of work, leading off with a single to Victorino. He then gets Pedroia to fly out, Victorino takes second and the Rays intentionally walk David Ortiz. Jose Iglesias then loops one into shallow center, scoring Victorino; and after a Jonny Gomes fly out, Saltalamacchia hits an RBI single. Ramos gets Will Middlebrooks to fly out to end the inning, but the Red Sox tack on two.

Desmond Jennings leads off the bottom half with a single, but a Lobaton fly out followed by an Escobar double play ends the game with a loss. Rays - 8, Red Sox - 10.

Despite the outcome, it was one of those games where the Rays never gave up -- though Cobb didn't start off the game spectacularly, the bullpen picked him up, and the offense continually brought the team back into the game.

Odds and ends:

- Zobrist set a career-high with five hits and became only the second Rays player to collect five hits at the Trop (B.J. Upton, 10/2/09). He's heated up these past three games, going nine-for-13 with four doubles and one home run.

- Torres' line in six relief appearances: 13.1 innings pitched, only three hits, zero runs, three walks and 18 strikeouts.

- 13 men were left on base, including 8 in scoring position, and a runner was stranded at third in five different innings.

- The team is awful against the Red Sox with RISP this season, hitting only .129 (9-for-70) and going 3-for-16 last night, while they have hit .330 (148-for-448) with RISP against all other opponents.

- Both Matt Moore and Cobb entered their past two starts with the lowest ERAs on the team (Moore-2.95; Cobb-2.39), then combined to allow 15 runs in only nine innings.
