Meanwhile, Princeton had what could have been the worst doubleheader in professional baseball history.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (63-36)
Pawtucket got to Jake Odorizzi early and held on to defeat Durham 4-3. Jake Odorizzi had uncharacteristic struggles with controls, walking five in 3.1 innings, only throwing 56% of his pitches for strikes. He allowed all four Pawtucket runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Brandon Guyer's third inning double scored two runs and made the score 3-2 at the time, but Odorizzi couldn't get the shutdown inning. Cory Wade, Frank De Los Santos and Ramon Ramirez combined to throw 5.2 scoreless innings. Tim Beckham also drove in a run late in the game.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (11-15)
Montgomery proved to need both 11th inning runs to squeak by Mobile 6-5. Mayo Acosta hit a two run home run in the 11th to give the Biscuits a 6-4 lead, and Juan Sandoval was able to protect the lead despite allowing a run in his second inning of work. Starter Mike Colla was solid through six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts. After falling behind 1-0 through one inning, Kyeong Kang gave Montgomery the lead with a two run homer in the fourth. Todd Glaesmann continued his hot July with two more doubles, and Robby Price had three hits.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (15-11)
Charlotte was rained out.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (18-9)
Bowling Green blew a lead in the top of the ninth, but they still managed to walk off with a 6-5 win over Wisconsin. Patrick Leonard's solo home run in the eighth broke a 3-3 tie, but the lead didn't last long. In his second inning of work, Nick Sawyer allowed a leadoff single, uncorked a wild pitch that moved the runner up a base, walked a batter, fired another wild pitch to move both runners into scoring position, and with the help of an error, both runs would eventually score. Fortunately, Wisconsin couldn't even record an out in the bottom half of the inning. After an Andrew Toles walk and Leonardo Reginatto single, Tommy Coyle hit a walkoff triple to win the game. He didn't get the win, but Dylan Floro had a great start. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk in seven innings with seven strikeouts. The Hot Rods piled up 14 hits with four players having multi-hit games.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (19-12)
Oscar Hernandez slugged a pair of homers, including a first inning grand slam, in Hudson Valley's 8-4 win over Williamsport. Four batters into the game, Hernandez hit his grand slam to put the Renegades up 4-0, and two batters later, they knocked out Williamsport starter Mitch Gueller without recording an out. The Crosscutters would score the next four runs, including three that were unearned, against Kevin Brandt, but Oscar's second home run of the game in the fifth inning was the first of three unanswered insurance runs they would score. Brandt gave up the runs on three hits and two walks in five innings with six strikeouts, and Justin Choate's four strikeouts in three perfect innings settled down the Williamsport's rally. Four Renegades had two hit games, including Johnny Field who drove in two runs.
Rookie Princeton Rays (6-20)
Princeton was hammered in game one of their doubleheader with Greeneville by a 10-0 score. The Astros scored all 10 of their runs in the first four innings, and the Rays only had two hits the entire game. Starter German Marquez only allowed a run each in the first and second innings, but the wheels really came off with back to back four run innings after that. Marquez was charged with six runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings, and reliever Stepan Havlicek was charged with four runs in 2.1 innings. Jesus Araiza and Coty Blanchard had Princeton's hits.
Game two did not go any better, and Princeton lost 4-0. Again, the Rays only had two hits, this time by Douglas Duran and Chad Napacoy. Josh Kimborowicz started and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks in three innings with two strikeouts, and Clayton Crum posted the same line in relief but with two walks and three strikeouts.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (10-13)
The GCL Rays were suspended.
Star of the day- Oscar still needs to refine his approach, but he's showing the tools.
