If you missed the Rays Arizona Fall League news yesterday, check it out here.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (84-53)
Durham scored in seven of their eight innings at the plate to hammer Charlotte 13-6. Travis Ishikawa drove home a first inning run for the Knights, but that would be the only time Durham would trail in the game. Jason Bourgeois would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, and they took the lead in the second. A pair of fifth inning runs helped Charlotte tie the game at three, but the Bulls really broke it open in the bottom half of the inning. They batted around and scored five runs, including four with two outs. That would be a recurring theme for the remainder game as four of their final five runs were also scored with two outs in an inning. Seven of the nine starters reached base multiple times, led by Bourgeois, Tim Beckham and Brandon Guyer each getting on four times. Eight of their 17 hits were doubles, all hit by different players. They also stole six bases, led by Beckham and Kevin Kiermaier with two each. Matt Buschmann allowed three runs in five innings, and Brandon Gomes allowed one in 1.1 innings of work.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (31-34)
Montgomery kept their slim playoff hopes alive with an 8-6 win over Jacksonville. Ryan Brett's sac fly in the third inning gave the Biscuits a 1-0 lead, but a half inning later, Derek Dietrich hit his third home run of the series, a two run shot that gave the Suns the lead. A seventh inning Biscuits run gave them a 4-3 lead right before a wild inning. Juan Sandoval came in to pitch and allowed the first two batters to reach base. After a strikeout, Zack Cox tied the game with a single, and a Steven Tinoco error allowed the runners to move up a base. Sandoval got the second out, but a two run single extended Jacksonville's lead. With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, Delmon Young singled home a run, and two out hits by Curt Casali and Cameron Seitzer drove in three more runs to give Montgomery the 8-6 lead. Starter Marquis Fleming struck out eight and walked none in 5.2 innings, but he did allow three runs on five hits. Casali and Shawn O'Malley each had three hits, and Casali reached base five times.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (35-25)
Willie Argo's two solo home runs weren't enough in Charlotte's 4-2 loss to St. Lucie. His first homer came in the first inning, but the lead didn't last long. The Mets scored a pair of runs in both the first and second innings, all of which were unearned. The Stone Crabs committed three errors in the game, and the two by Jake Hager in the first two innings cost Grayson Garvin. In 3.2 innings, Garvin was charged with all four unearned runs on four hits and a walk with a strikeout. Newcomer Jared Mortensen relieved him and was outstanding, but the offense couldn't make the comeback. Mortensen struck out seven in 4.1 scoreless innings, only allowing one hit and one walk. Argo's second home run came in the sixth inning.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (39-25)
Bowling Green was off.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (33-34)
Ryan McChesney's first career home run started the scoring for Hudson Valley in their 7-4 win over Connecticut. The undrafted catcher signed in 2012 hit a two run shot in the second inning, the first of two hits for him on the game. The Tigers answered back with two home runs of their own in the next three innings, and they led the Renegades 4-3 after four. Two batters into the sixth inning, James Harris doubled home Pat Blair to tie the game, and he would score what proved to be the winning run when Connecticut conceded it on a groundout. The Renegades would go on to add two more runs that inning on a Darryl George double and Ty Young sac fly. Despite his struggles, Ben Griset was credited with a win after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk in five innings with five strikeouts. Harris had two hits and stole a base, and John Alexander drove in two runs.
Rookie Princeton Rays (23-42)
Princeton scored three runs in the first inning, but the lead didn't hold up in a 6-4 loss to Elizabethton. Hunter Lockwood singled home the first run of the inning, and the next two both scored on hit batters with the bases loaded. Between the three run inning and the eighth when the Rays scored their fourth run, only two batters reached base. That's when the Twins made their move, scoring all six runs between the fourth and fifth innings. All runs were earned and charged to starter German Marquez, who only lasted 4.1 innings and allowed four hits and four walks while striking out two. Nolan Gannon struck out three in two perfect innings of relief. All five Princeton hits came from different batters, and all of them were singles.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (26-32)
A pair of seventh inning runs helped the GCL Rays squeak by the GCL Twins by a 2-1 score. Each team only had four hits, and the Rays scored both of their runs against the rehabbing Deolis Guerra. Riley Unroe led off the seventh with a walk, and he advanced to third on a stolen base and throwing error. Kean Wong singled him home, and Wong came around to score on a two out double by Erick Vasquez. Roel Ramirez allowed the Twins' run on three hits and two walks in 3.1 innings with two strikeouts, and Andres Gonzalez pitched 4.2 scoreless innings while being credited with the win.
Star of the day- Casali's season has quickly become very impressive.
Goat of the day- Hager's defense really hurt Charlotte.
