Not many other positive things to say about yesterday's games.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (73-43)
Durham could only manage three hits in their 4-1 loss to Gwinnett. Tim Beckham led off the fourth with a double, and after a wild pitch, he moved up to third base and then scored when the Braves conceded the run on a groundout, already leading 3-0. Merrill Kelly allowed all three of those runs, but he pitched decently. Only two of the runs were earned, and he allowed four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Beckham also drew the team's only walk.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (20-23)
Two home runs helped lead Montgomery to a 4-3 win over Chattanooga. Kyeong Kang's two run homer in the second inning got the scoring started, and Todd Glaesmann's solo shot in the sixth would prove to be the winning run. Despite not striking out a batter, starter Mike Colla worked a solid seven innings, only allowing one run on four hits and three walks. Juan Sandoval struggled to record the save in the ninth though, allowing two runs on three hits before recording the final out with the tying and winning runs on base. In his Montgomery debut, Ryan Brett kept on hitting, going 2/4 with a double. Curt Casali also had two hits and reached base three times.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (23-17)
Three eighth inning runs for the Stone Crabs tied the game at six, but they then allowed three in the ninth in a 9-6 loss to Brevard County. Jake DePew's two run single in the second gave Charlotte a 2-1 lead, but that would be the only half inning they would lead in the game. Starter Felipe Rivero struggled badly for the second time in his last three starts, allowing six runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings on 11 hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Tasked with preserving the tie in the ninth, Bruedlin Suero failed to record an out in his second inning of work. Lenny Linsky relieved him, and with the bases loaded and no runs in yet, he recorded the second out on a lineout to Jake Hager. Florida State's D'Vontrey Richardson delivered a two run single, and Yadiel Rivera followed that with another run scoring single. Hector Guevara hit a solo home run, and Alejandro Segovia drove in a pair of runs.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (27-16)
Bowling Green battled back from a 3-0 deficit but ultimately lost to South Bend by a 5-4 score. The Hot Rods had a pair of two run innings. The first came in the fourth inning when Justin O'Conner and Tyler Goeddel hit back to back RBI doubles, and Goeddel hit another double a couple innings later to drive in another run. Joey Rickard's sac fly immediately after tied the game, but the Silver Hawks would go ahead for good in the eighth on a solo home run by Alex Glenn. Jose Molina took the loss, but Matt Spann's early game struggles really hurt Bowling Green. He lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Rickard also had two hits.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (25-23)
Hudson Valley fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, and it was all downhill from there in their 13-4 loss to Auburn. Aaron Griffin was charged with the first six runs, but five of them were unearned because three of the Renegades' four errors came while he was on the hill. Griffin finished with six runs allowed on eight hits and no walks in six innings with two strikeouts. Three Hudson Valley relievers would each allow two or more runs. The Renegades were only outhit 17-11, but the poor defense made the difference. James Harris, Omar Narvaez and Granden Goetzman had two hit games.
Rookie Princeton Rays (11-32)
A 10 run fourth inning by Bluefield sunk Princeton in their 13-3 loss to the Blue Jays. Perhaps the only Rays highlight of that inning was the pair of Princeton pitchers getting one player to make two of the three outs. They sent 15 batters to the plate, but only one of their three home runs for the game came in that big inning. Nolan Gannon was charged with eight runs in 3.1 innings, but like Griffin's line, defense was a big story. Only three of those runs were earned due to the defense committing four of their five errors during that inning. Gannon struck out three and allowed six hits and a walk. Stepan Havlicek relieved him and was charged with four runs in 2.2 innings. Princeton only had four hits.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (17-21)
The GCL Rays were off.
Star of the day- Glaesmann's home run was the difference in a rough day on the farm.
Goat of the day- Lower level defenses are often inconsistent, and today was one of the poor days.
