Rays down on the farm August 8: Odorizzi struggles

On the same night Chris Archer exited with forearm soreness, Jake Odorizzi only lasted three innings.

Rainouts and a scheduled day off made Wednesday a pretty quiet day.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (73-46)

Rochester scored five early runs, and Durham couldn't come back in their 5-4 loss. He didn't get tagged with the loss, but Jake Odorizzi struggled and didn't last long. He was removed after three innings after allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. He got off the hook though because the Bulls scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third, two of which came on a single by Tim Beckham. Adam Liberatore was brought in to start the long night of relief, but he could only record one out on a sac but and exited after hitting a batter with the bases loaded. Durham conceded a second run that inning, and it proved to be the game winner. Cole Figueroa's sac fly drove in Durham's fourth run. Beckham was the star of the game though with a four hit day to raise his average to .288.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (22-23)

Montgomery was off.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (24-17)

Charlotte was rained out.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (28-18)

Great Lakes scored two eighth inning runs in Bowling Green's 4-3 loss to the Loons. Patrick Leonard's sixth inning solo home run with two outs broke a 2-2 tie, but it was a Great Lakes homer two innings later that made the difference. Aaron Miller, a former pitcher and first round selection, hit a two run shot with no outs in the eighth against Matt Spann to give them a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Spann was in his second inning in relief of Reinaldo Lopez who would have nothing to show for a very good start. Lopez allowed two runs on four hits and a walk in 6.1 innings while striking out nine. Just two starts ago, he struck out a career high 10 against Great Lakes. Andrew Toles, Tyler Goeddel and Joey Rickard all had two hit games.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (25-25)

Hudson Valley's 6-6 tie was broken in a nine run sixth inning in the Renegades' 15-6 loss to Batavia. Eight of the nine runs that inning would be charged to Justin Choate, but poor defense led to seven of them being unearned. Errors by Darryl George, James Harris and Julian Morillo in addition to a passed ball by Oscar Hernandez aided the Muckdogs' huge inning, but Choate still allowed six hits in the inning. A team effort led to Batavia's offensive breakout. Jaime Schultz allowed four runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings, and Colton Reavis allowed two runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Hudson Valley's offensive day was highlighted by back to back home runs from Morillo and Ariel Soriano. Harris had two hits, drove in two runs and stole three bases.

Rookie Princeton Rays (12-34)

A three run second inning for Bluefield sunk Princeton early in their 5-1 loss to the Blue Jays. Yoel Araujo committed a throwing error during the inning, but all three runs were still earned and charged to Jake Faria. Two of the runs were scored with back to back two out hits. Faria was able to settle in and pitch decently though, allowing the three runs in five innings on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Princeton scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk by Hunter Lockwood. Bralin Jackson had three hits and stole a pair of bases.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (17-23)

The GCL Rays were rained out.
