Jose Molina Designated for Assignment

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

We have our first casualty of the 2014 roster jam: Jose Molina?

There were six players identified as possible to be cut loose for prospects, among the 38 currently on the 40-man roster, but Jose Molina comes as a surprise. And yet, here we are:

Welcome to the Matt Silverman Era, where the love for frame-first catchers may not be so strong. Who knows, maybe he sticks around as a coach under the new regime. Otherwise the Rays have ten days to work out a trade with another club, or they'll still be on the hook for that salary.

Among the other players that might be designated for assignment, Brandon Gomes, Tim Beckham, Steve Geltz, Brandon Guyer, Cole Figueroa, and Mike Montgomery are all on red alert, though not necessarily in that order. As slots come open, here's my full priority list from this morning.

- Justin O'Conner
- Mikie Mahtook
- Ryan Brett
- Matt Andriese
- Adam Liberatore
- Jeff Ames
- Taylor Motter
- Grayson Garvin
- Merrill Kelly
- Kes Carter

For more on the 40-man roster moves to be made by tonight's 12:00 AM EST deadline, you can read more on who might be released from Ian, and who should be added from Danny.

UPDATE - 10:55 PM

To round out the Molina coverage, the Rays had ten days to trade Molina after he was designated. That may have happened quickly, with the catcher expected to be sent to the Texas Rangers according to our friends at Lone Star Ball, satisfying a day's worth of cooking on the hot stove between the two clubs.

We will follow up with sources if true.

Jose Molina will take on back up duties behind Rangers starting catcher Robinson Chirinos, a former prospect of the Rays designated for assignment in 2011.

UPDATE - 11:28 PM

Topkin seems pretty certain no trade of Molina, and I've got a shirt that says "I'm with Topkin."

Need to finish this soon or I'll get silly.

UPDATE - 11:50 PM

This came out a bit ago, but we haven't heard any more details yet.

Please get the full list, JJ Cooper. You are my only hope.
