A velocity spike must have interested the Rays

With the 72nd overall pick, the Rays select right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell from Walters State CC in Tennessee.

Baseball America tidbit:

His out pitch is his screwball that is tough for scouts to evaluate because of how infrequently he uses it, but it has above-average potential.

Per Baseball America, he's one of the eight youngest junior college players in this draft.

Baseball America ranked him 195th, while Perfect Game ranked him 138th.

It seems like the Rays went off the board a bit here.  He's 6'3 and 180 pounds, and it appears that he's added velocity in his one year of college action.  He has to improve his secondary pitches, and if not, he may end up in the bullpen.  The screwball is intriguing for sure.
