2014 MLB draft open thread part three: 30 rounds to go

If you missed rounds three through 10 yesterday, there is varying amount of information on those picks in yesterday's discussion thread.

To follow along, use the MLB.com draft tracker.  It includes a video stream where Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo will continue to attempt to share information about nearly every pick.

There could be a brief increase in action today.  Because teams don't lose bonus pool money for failing to sign any of today's picks, they may be more inclined to take risks on high school players probably set on heading to college.  10 players from Baseball America's top 100 remain on the board.

This will be updated periodically throughout the day with information on Rays picks, if any is available.

#337: RHP Spencer Moran, Mountain View H.S. (Arizona) 6'6 180- committed to Utah

Moran is ranked #152 by BA and #194 by Perfect Game.

With physical maturity and strength, Moran could pitch with a plus fastball consistently. His secondary pitches are raw, with a rudimentary changeup and a rolling breaking ball with inconsistent shape. He has flashed enough ability to spin it, though, that scouts who like him project an average future breaking ball.

#367: OF Braxton Lee, Mississippi, 5'10 185, L/R

BA did not rank him in the top 500, but Aaron Fitt did get a couple quotes on him from an anonymous coach in advance of this weekend's super regional against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Statistically, he seems like a major pest.  He stole 30 bases, walked more than he struck out and hit for almost no power.  Before transferring to Ole Miss, he played at the same JC Rhyne Hughes played at.

#397: 2B Jace Conrad, Louisiana-Lafayette, 5'11 195, L/R

The same article from above features a number of quotes about Conrad.  He slugged .587 this year with nine homers and also stole 22 bases.  I'm intrigued.  If you would like to see cell phone video of him hitting a grand slam, you're in luck.

#427: LHP Trevor Lubking, Pacific Lutheran University, 6'0 205

Paul Kirsch!  Lubking struck out 111 and walked 27 in 89 innings.  PLU competes in DIII's Northwest Conference.  If this site is to be believed, he is a crafty lefty.  Has 'crafty' ever been used to describe a righty?  Here is a three year old video of him batting.

#457: RHP Brian Miller, Vanderbilt, 6'4 200

Miller struck out 29 and walked five in 33.2 innings, and he holds Vandy's single season saves record.  Per his online bio, his nickname is the somewhat uncreative "B-Mill".  Aaron Fitt picked up some more anonymous coaching quotes before their super regional this weekend, and it sounds like he has a deceptive delivery with a low arm slot.

There's a pretty neat video showing his mechanics, but there's also this video of a runner pushing him over covering first base.

#487: LHP George Maisto, McLennan CC (Texas), 6'1 180

He's listed as George, but that's either incorrect, or he goes by Greg.  His listed birthdate conflicts with other sources too.  He struck out 58 in 76.2 innings, and he's committed to West Virginia if he doesn't sign.

#517: LHP Steve Ascher, SUNY Oneonta, 6'0 185

Ascher struck out 82 and walked 20 in 69.1 innings.  He appears to have a slingshot-type delivery if you watch some of his YouTube videos.

#547: SS Alec Sole, Saint Louis, 6'2 200, L/R

There are a handful of Sole videos on YouTube.  He batted .352 and stole 10 bases.  If he goes back for his senior year, he'll have a chance to extend his 26 game hitting streak.

#577: RHP Justin McCalvin, Kennesaw St., 5'10, 180

Aaron Fitt is back with some more super regional anonymous coach quotes.  It sounds like McCalvin has below average velocity but a lower arm slot.  A summer league prospect ranking post ($) lists his velocity a little higher and notes his wipeout slider is a tough pitch.

#607: RHP Kyle McKenzie, Tulane, 6'1 200

Seven months ago, Aaron Fitt heard McKenzie was throwing a low-90's fastball with a tough breaking ball.  He was drafted by the Yankees five years ago, and he struck out 35 and walked nine in 27.2 innings this year.

#637: LF Jaime Ayende-Morales, Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy, 6'1 170, S/R- committed to North Central Texas College

Ayende attends the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy.  His YouTube video isn't quite as exciting as Yoenis Cespedes' was, but here it is.

#667: LHP Ryan Pennell, Elon, 6'4 225

Pennell is a big guy, and in high school, he threw a mid-80's fastball ($).  In 90 career innings, he walked 67 batters.

#697: OF Zacrey Law, Robinson H.S. (Texas), 5'8 180, R/R- committed to Dallas Baptist

I've got nothin'

#727: 1B Nic Wilson, Georgia State, 6'6 240, R/R

He is pretty big, and with 18 home runs in 2014, he has the power to match.  He strikes out quite a bit, but a .683 slugging percentage is pretty impressive.  He has a long video of himself playing baseball on YouTube.

#757: LHP Tyler Wells, Nevada, 6'3 215

Coming into the year, Aaron Fitt considered Wells to be the sixth best prospect in the Mountain West Conference for this draft, thanks to a low-90's fastball and changeup.  He struck out 41 and walked 20 in 47.1 innings.

#787: OF Cade Gotta, San Diego Christian College, 6'4 205, R/R

Gotta has apparently played at a couple different smaller colleges.  Here's a video of him in batting practice.

#817: 2B Grant Kay, Louisville, 6'0 185, R/R

Kay was on the BA 500 in 2013 out of a junior college, but he wasn't drafted and went to Louisville where he made an immediate impact, thanks to his patient approach and base running ability.  He stole 23 bases in 26 attempts.  He showed power in the JC ranks, but it didn't come out as much with Louisville.

#847: 3B Carter Burgess, Sam Houston State, 6'1 200, R/R

Burgess had a down season from 2013 when his OPS dropped 50 points.  In the off-season, he was productive in the Northwoods League, one of the better ones in the country.

#877: RHP Tomas Michelson, Illinois-Chicago, 6'4 185

Michelson is evidently a ground ball machine, which may be why he was decently successful last year before allowing more than a hit per inning this season.

#907: RHP Trevor Dunlap, Washington, 6'7 230

Back to Kirsch-land.  Dunlap pitched in relief for the Huskies two seasons after transferring from a junior college.  He has 97 strikeouts and 43 walks in 122 innings.

#937: RHP Andrew Woeck, N.C. State, 5'10 180

Despite a below average fastball, Woeck was effective out of the bullpen for the Wolfpack.  He used his wide array of pitches to strike out 41 and walk just nine in 29 innings.

#967: OF Josh Davis, Union H.S. (Oklahoma), 6'1 175, R/R- committed to Pepperdine)

Davis appears to be a USA Baseball alum from earlier in life.  I have nothing here.

#997: RF Patrick Grady, Lander University, 6'0 225, R/L

This school went 52-9, and may play in some kind of bandbox because the team leader had 20 home runs.  Grady himself had an OBP over .500 and hit nine dingers.  He also stole 16 bases.

I'm suspicious of someone that throws left-handed but bats right.  Here's a YouTube account from someone named Pat Grady that could be him.

He plays in something called the Peach Belt Conference.  I'm seeking confirmation if they wear peaches on their belt, because it's the style at the time.

#1027: RF Chris Knott, East Stroudsburg, 6'0 215, R/R

East Stroudsburg is local to me.  Knott led the Warriors with five home runs and 14 steals, and he slugged .667.  He was on the watch list for the Division II Player of the Year award which is apparently named after Tino Martinez.

#1057: LHP Kyle Bird, Flagler College, 6'3 190

Bird pitched two seasons at Florida State without much success.  With Flagler, his ERA was an even 5.00.  He had 39 strikeouts and 20 walks in 54 innings.

#1087: C Isias Alcantar, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 6'0 215, R/R

Alcantar is listed as a catcher, but I can't find any evidence that he played the position as an amateur.  Maybe the Rays are trying something new.  His was the SWAC Player of the Year in 2013, but it looked like he missed some time this season.

#1117: RHP Matthew Plitt, Louisiana-Lafayette, 6'4 220

With a low-90's fastball and quality breaking ball, Plitt has been solid for the somewhat surprising Ragin' Cajuns.  He has 42 strikeouts and 27 walks in 56 innings.

#1147: OF Chris DeMorais, University of New Haven, 6'0 195, L/R

DeMorais had a higher OBP than SLG in his senior season, so this is probably not the place to look for power.

#1177: 1B Blake Grant-Parks, Cal State Monterrey Bay, 6'2 195, R/R

The Rays previously drafted Grant-Parks in 2011, so he's going backwards.  They obviously like him, but an OPS below .650 isn't getting it done.  His caught stealing percentage was only 11.5%.

#1207: RHP Conor Harber, Western Nevada CC, 6'2 205

Harber actually is on the BA 500.  Since it took this long for him to get taken, I'd expect to see him playing for Oregon next year, where he's committed to play in 2015.

[...] scouts like him better on the mound, where he has hit 93 and sits 87-91 mph with some life down in the zone. His below-average curveball lags behind his changeup, though he has shown enough feel for spin to allow scouts to project his curve as average.
