In Omaha, Joe McCarthy's home run helped Virginia earn a win against Arkansas. His Cavs will take on the Gators Monday.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (37-27)
A five-run second inning sunk Durham in its 8-6 loss to Louisville. An RBI single by Allan Dykstra and run-scoring double by Mikie Mahtook actually gave the Bulls an early 3-0 lead, but the Bats got to Matt Buschmann in the second. They got four of their runs on three straight one-out hits, and a solo home run with two down capped the inning. Corey Brown homered in the ninth before Durham brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Hak-Ju Lee flew out to end the game.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (31-30)
Tommy Coyle's walkoff home run lifted Montgomery to a 3-2 win over Pensacola in game one. The Biscuits found themselves trailing by one in two instances. Boog Powell's third-inning double tied the game at one, and Coyle scored on a groundout in the fifth. Austin Pruitt allowed two runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings, and Ryan Garton got credited with a win for striking out three batters over the final four outs.
Coyle was at the plate again in the eighth inning when the Biscuits walked off to a 4-3 win in game two. In their last at-bat, the Biscuits got an RBI hit from Boog Powell, and a bases-loaded walk from Cameron Seitzer tied the game. In the eighth, a wild pitch scored Patrick Leonard from third base. Jared Mortensen allowed three runs -- two earned -- in five innings, and Mark Sappington and Parker Markel combined to shut down the Blue Wahoos over the final three frames.
Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (42-20)
German Marquez overcame a rocky first inning in Charlotte's 9-2 win over Jupiter. He allowed three hits in the first inning that led to two runs, but one was unearned due to Mike Marjama's error. Over his final five innings, Marquez only allowed two more hits, and he finished with three strikeouts and no walks in seven frames. In the top of the second, Marjama made up for his mistake when three runs scored on his single that also resulted in a Hammerheads error, and he contributed insurance runs later in the game.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (36-26)
Casey Gillaspie homered again in Bowling Green's 5-2 win over Wisconsin. Zach Cooper, signed by the Rays out of an indy league last year before releasing him from Montgomery this season, allowed two runs -- one earned -- in the seventh inning that put the Hot Rods ahead, and Gillaspie hit his 15th homer an inning later for insurance. Bowling Green starter Greg Harris made just one mistake -- a two-run homer in the second that put Wisconsin ahead. He finished with two runs allowed on two hits and three walks in six innings with six strikeouts, and Edgar Gomez got the win with three scoreless innings of relief.
