It was announced that Jake Bauers and Jacob Faria would be headed for Montgomery, but Charlotte would need players to fill those vacancies. Enter Casey Gillaspie, Brent Honeywell and Jace Conrad.
I predicted Gillaspie would be bumped up after the All-Star Game (this was not difficult; he was performing well and that is what a lot of teams do this time of the season), but I did not expect Bauers to head up too. Not that he isn't deserving, but I thought one of three things might happen, in order of likelihood:
1. Gillaspie and Bauers split time between first base and DH for Charlotte.
2. Gillaspie goes straight to Montgomery.
3. Bauers is promoted to Montgomery.
I wonder if the new regime has some different thoughts on handling prospects.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (40-33)
Dylan Floro was rocked again in Durham's 7-5 loss to Toledo. Floro did not make it out of the third inning, allowing all seven Mud Hens runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings, and over his last three starts, he has allowed 19 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings. The Bulls were trailing by six in the ninth before Richie Shaffer brought them a little closer with a two-run home run. Eugenio Velez's two-run triple brought the tying run to the plate, but Corey Brown struck out to end the game.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (0-0)
Montgomery is at the All-Star break.
Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (0-0)
German Marquez was not at his best in Charlotte's 6-3 loss to Bradenton. A starter after striking out a season-high eight batters, he retired the first 10 batters of the game before his own two errors in the fourth led to a pair of Marauders runs. He finished having allowed five runs -- three earned -- on nine hits and two walks in six innings. Grady Sizemore hit a pair of doubles as the Stone Crabs' leadoff hitter.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (0-0)
Bowling Green is at the All-Star break.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (4-2)
Hudson Valley fell in a big hole early on its way to a 10-1 loss to Lowell. Already up 1-0, the Spinners sent nine to the plate in a six-run second inning. Starter Greg Maisto was charged with six runs -- five earned -- in 1 2/3 innings, but reliever Cristopher Crisostomo did not fare much better, allowing four runs -- three earned -- in 3 1/3 innings. Jake Cronenworth's triple in the fifth accounted for the Renegades' only run, and Diego Castillo struck out five in four innings of relief.
Rookie Princeton Rays (1-1)
Princeton was on the right side of a wild slugfest in its 10-9 win over Burlington. Down 4-0 entering the bottom of the second, Princeton broke out with an eight-run inning. It got two of those runs on bases-loaded walks, two more on wild pitches, and Jamie Mitchell capped the scoring with a two-run double. Burlington took the lead with a five-run sixth, but Princeton tied it in its half of the inning and then went ahead again on a wild pitch in the eighth. Starter Jose Alvarado allowed four runs in three innings.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (0-3)
The GCL Rays were shut out again in their 3-0 loss to the GCL Red Sox. All five Rays hits were singles, including one off the bat of Adrian Rondon. Andrew Woeck was one of three Rays pitchers to allow a run, but Ian Kendall threw a scoreless inning.
