Game Notes: First of Three vs Red Sox

Alex Colome vs. Rick Porcello

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

In a season full of disappointment for the Fenway Faithful, Rick Porcello has been particularly disappointing.

Shipped to Boston in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes this past offseason, the Red Sox inked Porcello to a four year extension worth $82.5 million. The 26-year-old had just completed the best season of his five-year career, tossing a career high 204 innings and posting a career low earned run average (3.43), walk rate (1.80/9), and home run rate (0.79/9).

In his first 14 starts of the 2015 season, Porcello has been unable to replicate the performance from the season which earned him his payday. In 100 innings, the right hander has posted a 5.61 ERA, the third highest among American League starting pitchers.

Porcello has already surrendered 13 home runs this season (1.35 HR/9) and is well on his way to breaking his career high of 18. He has seen a 7.5% increase in the number of fly balls allowed and a 5% increase in the number of hard hit balls in comparison to last season.

The Red Sox, currently in last place in the American League East, give the ball to Porcello in tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Porcello has yet to win in the month of June and has posted a 6.20 ERA in 24 ⅔ innings this month.

The Rays will send Alex Colome to the mound for the 7:10 first pitch.

--As bad as Porcello has been this year, his only scoreless outing has been against none other than Tampa Bay. Porcello tossed seven shutout innings against the Rays at Fenway Park on May 5.
