Rays down on the farm August 11: GCL Rays eliminated

With several weeks remaining in the season, the GCL Rays have nothing to play for except player development, the whole point of minor league baseball

Brent Honeywell had another start disrupted due to rain. Weather seems to do a better job managing his inning total than the Rays could dream of.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (56-60)

Durham fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and never caught up in its 6-4 loss to Norfolk. Bradin Hagens allowed a three run home run but did not yield any more in his five-inning outing. In his first relief appearance since his pro debut in 2012, Dylan Floro allowed two runs in an inning. The Bulls had cut their deficit to 3-2 in the third with RBI hits from Leonardo Reginatto and Boog Powell but could not get closer.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (24-19)

Jake Bauers and Dayron Varona homered to lift Montgomery to an 11-7 win over Jacksonville. The Biscuits scored four two-out runs in the second, and Bauers' three-run homer in the fourth capped a four-run inning that gave them a 9-2 lead. Varona's two-run shot in the eighth added insurance and kept the game out of reach. Chris Kirsch allowed three runs in five innings, and Ryne Stanek allowed a solo home run in two innings out of the bullpen.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (16-25)

Charlotte erased a five-run deficit but came up short in its 8-7 loss to Palm Beach in 12 innings. Because of a rain delay over two hours and the extra innings, this game did not end until after 1 AM when I really wanted to go to bed. Down 7-2, Yoel Araujo's two-run homer in the seventh kick-started the comeback. The Stone Crabs fell in the 12th when a Mike Marjama error allowed Palm Beach to score an unearned run. Brent Honeywell struck out three in 1 1/3 innings before the delay.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (20-23)

Bowling Green was off.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (22-27)

Hudson Valley was hammered in its 7-0 loss to Aberdeen. Roel Ramirez allowed a first-inning home run to Baltimore's first-round pick D.J. Stewart and ended up allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings. The Renegades only had four hits themselves.

Rookie Princeton Rays (27-19)

Princeton lost a 3-0 lead before falling to Danville, 5-3, in 11 innings. After David Rodriguez drove in an insurance run in the 9th to extend Princeton's lead to three runs, Ruben Paredes was an out away from ending the game before a Blake Butera error gave Danville life. With just three hits and another error, the game was tied, and Paredes allowed a walkoff home run in the 11th. Starter Eduar Lopez struck out three and scattered three hits and three walks in six scoreless innings.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (9-32)

The GCL Rays tied the GCL Twins over the final seven innings, but the eight-run second inning was unhelpful in their 11-3 loss. Rafelin Lorenzo picked a runner off third with no outs, but Jose Disla was unable to record outs himself. A pair of singles and walk led to his early exit, and Sandy Brito allowed his inherited runners to score. Disla was charged with five runs -- four earned -- in 1 1/3 innings.

The GCL Red Sox beat the GCL Orioles in game one of their doubleheader to eliminate the GCL Rays from playoff contention. They then spiked the football and won the second game too.
