Astros 3, Rays 2: Boxy Walked Off in Extras

Nine Jake Odorizzi strikeouts and a Curt Casali bomb were not enough to top the Astros on Tuesday.

8:10 games are really the worst. They're not so late, like west coast games, when I know there is no chance I'll stay up and watch the whole thing, but they're early enough that I try. Last night I tried and I failed. I had my recap pen all sharpened and ready, and woke up on my couch this morning remembering nothing after the eighth inning. After replaying the remainder of the game on my DVR, I wish I could go back to that childlike innocence.

Jake Odorizzi was a monster today. The former Highland Bulldog gave up just six hits, one run and a walk over six innings while tallying nine strikeouts. Unfortunately, Marwin Gonzalez and Carlos Correa were even bigger monsters; the former at the plate, the latter on both sides of the ball. The Rays offense had nine hits and plenty of chances, but ultimately went 0-8 with runners in scoring position. Let's dive in.

The Tampa Bay bats got feisty in the first. After Scott Feldman walked Grady Sizemore and allowed a Longo single, the Rays had two on with one out. James Loney would fly out to bring Logan Forsythe to the plate. Frosty launched one into the gap between third and short, but wait! A diving Carlos Correa made a freaking amazing, just dadgummed nasty diving play to stop it and launch the ball to first just in time to end the threat with no runs allowed.

Forsythe responded with his own diving, backhanded grab on a Jed Lowrie grounder in the bottom of the frame to end the inning and strand an Astors runner.

Houston got on the board first in the bottom of the third. With Jason Castro on first, Altuve bunted Longo's way, who grabbed the ball and fired it to first for what was initially called an out. The play would be reviewed and overturned to put two on with one out. Marwin Gonzalez sent Castro home with flare double that found fair ground inside the foul line. 1-0 Astros.

Curt Casali tied it back up for the Rays in the top of the 5th with a massive moonshot over the left field wall. Feldman left a cutter up that Casali punished. 1-1

The Rays took the lead in the top of the 7th. With the bases loaded, Longoria bounced one to Correa that looked like a sure inning-ending double play, but Correa's throw was high for the perfectly reasonably sized Jose Altuve, so Kevin Kiermaier was able to cross the plate. 2-1 Rays

This is when I fell asleep. The Rays up 2-1 in the top of the 8th. All was right in the world.

And then I woke up, to this harsh hellscape of reality where the Rays bullpen gave up the game and our baseball club is back under .500.

Jake McGee gave up the tying run in the bottom of the 8th, giving up singles to Jose Altuve and Marwin Gonzalez before Carlos Correa pounded an RBI double to left field to tie it up 2-2. He would escape further damage thanks to a nifty 3-2-2 double play from Loney and Casali.

Brad Boxberger was called up on to pitch the 10th inning, but he wouldn't last long. Marwin Gonzalez was his first and only batter, has he took a 3-2 pitch well into the right field seats for a walk-off homer and an Astros win.

Our Rays are now 59-60 on the season and will send Nathan Karns to the mound tonight.
