Rays down on the farm August 22: Elmore gets 2nd career win

New, 12 comments

In his sixth career appearance on the mound, Jake Elmore improves to 2-0

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Jake Elmore clearly has the will to win. As does Richie Shaffer, who had another huge game Friday.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (62-66)

Nick Franklin's single in the 14th inning gave Durham a 7-6 win over Toledo. Franklin tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and with two outs in the 14th, he singled home Mikie Mahtook, who doubled to start the inning. Earlier in the game, Joey Butler and Richie Shaffer hit home runs. Jake Elmore got the win with a scoreless inning of relief, capping off a night for Durham's bullpen which yielded just a run in 8 1/3 innings after Scott Diamond allowed five runs in 5 2/3 frames.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (32-21)

Montgomery lost a 6-2 lead before eventually falling, 7-6, to Tennessee in 12 innings. Tyler Goeddel doubled in two and scored himself in the second to give the Biscuits a 4-0 edge, and hits in the sixth by Justin O'Conner and Jake DePew gave them their four-run advantage. The Smokies tied the game with consecutive two-run innings and won it off Mark Sappington in the 12th.

Because of the extra innings, the second game of the doubleheader was postponed.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (18-34)

German Marquez was very good, but Charlotte's offense was not in its 3-0 loss to Jupiter. He allowed just one run on a sacrifice fly after giving up a single and hitting consecutive batters and struck out nine and scattered just six hits in seven innings with no walks.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (26-27)

Bowling Green's comeback came up short in its 4-3 loss to Lansing. The Lugnuts scored a run in the first and added three more in the third, and Chris Pike finished with four runs -- two earned -- allowed on nine hits in six innings with six strikeouts. Cristian Toribio's two-out single in the fifth got the Hot Rods on the board, and they added two more in the sixth on RBI hits by Alec Sole and Hunter Lockwood.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (29-29)

Hudson Valley rallied late for a 4-2 win over Tri-City. Trailing 2-1 in the eighth, the Renegades got a leadoff double from Jake Cronenworth, and he scored on Michael Russell's single. After Russell moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, he stole third and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error. Starter Roel Ramirez allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings, and the win went to John Williams with two scoreless innings of relief.

Rookie Princeton Rays (33-24)

A seven-run third lifted Princeton to a 13-4 win over Bristol. Hits by David Rodriguez and David Olmedo-Barrera gave Princeton a 3-0 lead in the first, and it blew the game open soon after that. Zacrey Law led off with a home run, and the next five batters reached on their way to the big inning. Law later reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Starter Blake Bivens allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (12-40)

Garrett Whitley homered, but the GCL Rays needed him to do so four more times in their 14-7 loss to the GCL Orioles. His solo homer in the fourth started a three-run inning to tie the game at four, and the GCL Rays took the lead an inning later before the GCL Orioles blew the game open with a six-run fifth. Francisco Mena was charged with six runs while only recording an out, and starter Sandy Brito also allowed six runs.
