Richie Shaffer is not the only hitting prospect to be getting some work at new positions. Patrick Leonard played his second career game in right field Saturday.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (63-66)
Matt Moore struck out a career-high 16 batters in Durham's 5-2 win over Columbus. Moore recorded his first eight outs via the strikeout, and that would have tied Moore's season high on its own, but he continued rolling. After striking out two in the six, he allowed a single and home run that gave the Clippers a 2-1 lead, but he finished his outing with another punchout. The Bulls scored four in the seventh, capped by J.P. Arencibia's two-run single.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (33-22)
Montgomery took a lead in the eighth inning before falling to Tennessee by a 6-5 score in game one. Leonardo Reginatto's single scored Justin O'Conner, but Brad Schreiber could not secure the win. With two outs, the Smokies scored two on a walkoff single. The Vogelbach homered for Tennessee, and Biscuits starter Jared Mortensen allowed four runs -- two earned -- in seven innings.
Tyler Goeddel's two-run home run helped the Biscuits to a 5-2 win in game two. After Tennessee went up 1-0 in the first, Juniel Querecuto walked in the third to set up Goddel's 11th dinger of the season to give Montgomery the lead. Jake Bauers drove in a third run in the inning, and Reginatto doubled in a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Matt Lollis allowed a run in four innings in his spot start, and Jeff Ames allowed a run over the last three frames.
Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (18-35)
Charlotte was shut out again in a 2-0 loss to Jupiter. For the second straight game, the Stone Crabs got absolutely nothing going against the Hammerheads. Hunter Wood was sharp over seven scoreless innings, scattering just three hits and a walk with six strikeouts but could not get credited with a win.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (26-28)
Jose Mujica was hammered in Bowling Green's 11-3 loss to Lansing. In the worst start of his career, he allowed eight runs -- seven earned -- on 11 hits and two walks in four innings with no strikeouts. Alec Sole singled in the Hot Rods' first run in the sixth, but Ryan Pennell allowed the Lugnuts to add on insurance.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (29-30)
Hudson Valley coughed up a three-run lead in its 7-6 loss to Tri-City. Jake Cronenworth's single in the seventh put the Renegades up three, but he ValleyCats stormed back in the home half of the inning. Justin McCalvin was lifted after allowing two runs, and Reece Karalus soon allowed a two-run homer that lost the lead. Starter Angel Yepez allowed three runs in five innings with six strikeouts.
Rookie Princeton Rays (33-25)
Princeton's offense never showed up in its 2-0 loss to Bristol. Brock Burke gave up both runs in the second, and that would be it for the game. He finished with the two runs allowed on five hits and a walk in five innings with three strikeouts. Princeton had just four hits.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (12-40)
The GCL Rays fell behind early and could not catch up in their 6-1 loss to the GCL Orioles. Ernesto Frieri was charged with three runs -- two earned -- while recording just two outs, and Justin Marsden was unable to settle the game down. Junior Feliz struck out nine in five scoreless innings of relief. The GCL Orioles conceded the GCL Rays' only run on a Miguel Hernandez groundout.
