Rays down on the farm August 27: Whitley promoted to Hudson Valley

The New York native will bolster the Renegades' outfield down the stretch

If the Rays feel that Garrett Whitley is ready for this assignment, I would expect to see him with Bowling Green in 2016. That is still a long way off though.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (66-66)

Joey Butler homered twice in Durham's 8-4 win over Norfolk. His solo shot in the fourth cut the Bulls' deficit, and his two-run homer in the sixth pulled them within one again and started a stretch of seven unanswered runs. Bradin Hagens allowed all four runs -- two earned -- on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings with no strikeouts.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (37-22)

Leonardo Reginatto's 10th-inning home run gave Montgomery a 4-2 win over Jackson. After the Biscuits had gone scoreless since the third inning, Tyler Goeddel singled with one out in the 10th and would score on Reginatto's two-out home run. Starter Taylor Guerrieri allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits in five innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (19-37)

Charlotte was off.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (28-29)

Carter Burgess and Riley Unroe homered in a four-run fourth in Bowling Green's 6-4 win over Great Lakes. Burgess' first of the year led off the inning broke a 2-2 tie, and after Thomas Milone drove in Nick Ciuffo, Unroe's two-run shot opened up a 6-2 lead. Henry Centeno was charged with four runs on four hits and two walks in six innings

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (32-31)

Cameron Varga turned the tables on Brooklyn in Hudson Valley's 4-0 win over Brooklyn. After the Renegades were one-hit Tuesday, Varga and two other pitchers limited the Cyclones to five hits. Varga struck out six and allowed just three hits and a walk in five innings, and John Williams and Reece Karalus each threw two innings. In the fifth, Angel Moreno and Manny Sanchez had RBI doubles, and Alex Schmidt and Jose Paez capped the four-run inning with run-scoring hits.

Rookie Princeton Rays (33-29)

Princeton could not hold a 6-2 lead in its 7-6 loss to Bluefield. On the cusp of clinching a playoff berth, Princeton dropped its fifth straight game. Andrew Woeck walked the first two batters of the eighth, and Armando Bastardo allowed both inherited runners to score, as well as one of his own. In the ninth, he allowed a leadoff double, and the walkoff run scored on a ground ball to second base. Kewby Meyer hit his fourth home run, and Spencer Moran allowed three runs -- two earned -- in six innings.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (15-42)

The GCL Rays failed to win three games in a row for the first time this season with their 4-2 loss to the GCL Twins in game one. A two-out rally in the first, capped by a run-scoring wild pitch, gave the GCL Twins a 1-0 lead, and after the GCL Rays tied the game at one in the third, the GCL Twins got two more two-out runs in their half of the inning. Edrick Agosto allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings, and Ernesto Frieri struck out two in two scoreless frames.

The GCL Rays rebounded for a 6-2 win in a game two that was completed early, because why bother playing full games in this wretched season? After the GCL Twins tied the game at one in the fourth, Miguel Hernandez broke the tie with a two-run triple and scored on Joseph Astacio's bunt hit. Starter Willy Ortiz allowed two runs -- one earned -- in five innings. Casey Gillaspie was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
