Rays down on the farm August 5: Snell strikes out seven

Blake Snell has 20 strikeouts in 14 innings with Durham

If you missed it Tuesday, I did a midseason top-30 prospect list. There should be more on the way this week.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (53-57)

Blake Snell got little support in Durham's 5-1 loss to Indianapolis. He allowed a two-out run in the first, and his own error contributed to a pair of unearned runs in the third. He finished with those runs allowed on four hits and a walk in five innings with seven strikeouts. Durham's only run was unearned, and Desmond Jennings was 1-for-3 with a double.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (21-16)

Montgomery's offense checked out early in its 7-6 loss to Mississippi in 11 innings. After the teams traded two-run innings in the first, the Biscuits went up 6-2 in the second. Tommy Coyle and Cameron Seitzer each had RBI singles, and Johnny Field drove in two with a triple. However, the Biscuits only had five hits the rest of the way. Starter Chris Kirsch allowed five runs -- three earned -- in five innings, and Mark Sappington took the loss.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (16-19)

Brent Honeywell was just okay in Charlotte's 5-4 loss to Palm Beach in 10 innings. Having allowed two runs through the first five innings, the Stone Crabs tried getting him through a sixth, but he was pulled after allowing back-to-back doubles to start the inning. He finished with three runs allowed on six hits in five-plus innings with four strikeouts in a walk. Steve Ascher was charged with an unearned run in the 10th and his first loss of the season.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (19-19)

Yonny Chirinos' quality start was not nearly enough in Bowling Green's 3-0 loss to Quad Cities. He allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Nick Ciuffo had two of the Hot Rods' four hits.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (20-23)

Hudson Valley's offense was quieted in its 1-0 loss to Tri-City. The Renegades, who had just four hits, wasted a fine effort from starter Roel Ramirez, who struck out five and scattered just tow hits and a walk in six scoreless innings. The ValleyCats got the only run of the game off Luis Urena in the ninth.

Rookie Princeton Rays (24-16)

Eduar Lopez's Rays debut was a solid one in Princeton's 4-3 win over Danville. After pitching in the Pioneer League, Lopez will probably enjoy being in a friendlier environment for pitchers. He earned a win after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in five innings with four strikeouts. Zacrey Law's fifth home run of the season gave Princeton a 1-0 lead in the first, and he scored what proved to be the decisive run in the eighth.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (8-28)

The GCL Rays were crushed again in their 10-2 loss to the GCL Red Sox in game one. After Sam Triece and Jim Patterson each tossed a scoreless inning, Jose Disla allowed seven runs -- six earned -- in 3 2/3 innings. Garrett Whitley and Adrian Rondon each had hits, and Devin Davis hit his first pro home run.

Game two was slightly different but had the same result. A wild pitch and error helped the GCL Rays scored first, but the GCL Red Sox later scored two and won 2-1. Junior Feliz allowed both runs in four innings.
