Ya know what? This Matt Moore fellow may just turn out ok after all. This late in the season, we're looking for positives to carry us through the long winter until the promise of next spring. Sure, it's not lost on me that Matt Moore got to pitch against the woeful Marlins tonight, but I'll take seven hits, one walk, and one run scattered over seven effective innings any day. It's something to build on.
The bats had some pop tonight as well. After a first inning Christian Yelich double put the Fish up 1-0 early, a solo shot from Mikie Mahtook in the bottom of the third tied it back up. Our favorite LSU product reached down and scooped an Adam Conley four-seamer well into the left field seats.
A Kevin Kiermaier sac fly put the Rays up 2-1 in the 4th, and that score would stand until the 8th inning. Martin Prado, who was all over the field tonight diving into the stands to make catches, made some solid contact on an Alex Colome cutter, and singled into center field to bring Christian Yelich across the plate to tie the game 2-2.
Asdrubal Cabrera, who is not interested in extra innings, put an end to any fight the Marlins had left in the 8th inning. With Nick Franklin on base, pinch running for John Jaso after a Dee Gordon error, Bryan Morris threw a sinker that didn't sink (like... at all), and Cabby made him pay. He took that garbage pitch into the right field bleachers to put the Rays up 4-2. It was a lead they would not relinquish.
Tonight's win pulls the Rays to 76-81 on the year. The dream of a .500 season is not dead just yet. Drew Smyly is on the mound tomorrow night in St Pete opposite Jarred Cosart.
