Tank: Zobrist Says Goodbye

Morning news and links!

This Date in Team History!

In 2006, the Rays signed Ty Wigginton, who provided a season and a half of quality as he slugged over 20 homers in 2006 and was on pace for more of the same the next year, when he was traded for Dan Wheeler, who was a staple of the team's dominating pen from 2008 to 2010. Wigginton's most clutch moment came in the off-season, when he delivered his own son in a bedroom closet.

In 2015, the Rays officially signed Asdrubal Cabrera to a one year deal, who would go on to post a very successful year and earn a nice three year deal from the Mets the next off season. Meanwhile, the Rays also traded their middle infield duo of the past two years, Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar, to the A's for John Jaso, Daniel Robertson, and Boog Powell.

Both Escobar and Zobrist were moved to separate organizations following the trade, with both posting solid years. Jaso spent half the season on the DL, but produced decent results and was rewarded with a two year deal courtesy of Pittsburgh. Powell was on the cusp of reaching the majors at the season's end and has since been traded to Seattle. Robertson also missed a portion of the year due to injury and will likely begin 2016 in Double-A.

Trivia Time!

The answer to yesterday's question was Chad Qualls, answered correctly by jtmorgan

Wrong answers included Andy Sonnanstine and Chad Bradford

Today's prospect:

He's a great fastball hitter with power to all fields and has outstanding plate discipline for a slugger. After making major adjustments to shorten his stroke, he makes consistent, hard contact. [Prospect] is big and slow, limited to first base and DH. Though he has worked hard on his defense, he's only adequate. Some scouts remain skeptical whether his power will translate to the majors.

Hint: although he was never one of MLB's top 100, he was near the top in his organization for consecutive years from 2003-2004.

There are 84 days until Opening Day!

That's the same number of runs batted in Carlos Pena had in 2010.

Three of those came from this extra inning blast.
