Rays' system continues to gain recognition

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Rays' farm system continues to gain praise as MLB Pipeline revealed its top ten 1B prospects today. According to MLB.com's Jim Callis, youngster Jake Bauers is ranked No. 7 and 2014 1st round pick Casey Gillaspe at No. 9. Previously, only Gillaspe made the list at No. 6.

Both Rays' prospects outranked Sam Travis of the Red Sox, and Dan Vogelbach of the Cubs, and had Josh Naylor of the Marlins sandwiched in between.

Casey Gillaspie batted .278/.358/.530 at A+ level Bowling Green, and was praised by Callis for his patience at the plate saying,

Gillaspie is a switch-hitter with plus power and a penchant for drawing walks from both sides of the plate.

Jake Bauers didn't even appear on the list last year, and makes his debut at No. 7. The 19 year old finished 2015 at AA-Montgomery batting .276/.329/.405 and continued his high production in the AFL, hitting .254/.342/.403. He also was able to post average defensive numbers in the corner OF spots with no prior experience. Heres what Callis had to say:

Bauers held his own against Double-A pitching at age 19 thanks to his smooth left-handed swing and advanced approach. He boosted his stock by continuing to produce in the Arizona Fall League, and he looked comfortable manning the outfield corners while there.

Earlier this week, Blake Snell made MLB Pipelines top 10 LHP prospects at No. 2 only ranking below the highly regarded Julio Urias.

The 2016 Top 100 Prospects will be unveiled on Friday, Jan 29th on MLB.com. You can also tune in at 9 PM on MLB Network as they reveal the top 50.
