It’s a sad day for Rays fans as Root Sport Southwest, the network that is the main carrier of Houston Astros games, announced they have hired Todd Kalas to be their head play-by-play announcer.
Kalas has been with the Rays since the beginning, mainly serving as a pre- and post- game host while also offering in-game interviews and sometimes taking over in the booth when needed.
Rays fans can be happy for Kalas, who is finally receiving a big break. It will be a homecoming for Kalas, who was actually born in Houston while his father, the legendary Harry Kalas, was calling games for the Astros.
Kalas will be taking over for the retiring Bill Brown. Former Rays and Astros player Geoff Blum will be promoted to be Kalas’ partner in the booth.
During his time with the Rays, Kalas endeared himself to Rays fans with his soothing voice and willingness to make, or be the target of a good joke. During games he could be found strolling around the stadium, maybe interviewing a player’s family member, maybe hanging with a noteworthy group of fans, or maybe exploring the pleasures of MLB road venues:
We're speechless... and jealous. @TampaBayTK taking a mid-game dip in the D'backs' pool! @RaysBaseballhttps://t.co/0VQK6yVwSX

Kalas shall also forever be remembered by those who watched him choke up trying to deliver the heart wrenching news of Don Zimmer’s passing in 2014.
Thank you for all the memories Todd and best of luck in Houston.
