Game 8 Notes: Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Indians

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Smyly is a surprise start for the Rays this Wednesday.

Today's Starting Pitchers:

W L ERA FIP K% BB% AVG HR GS IP fWAR
Drew Smyly 5 2 3.11 3.91 28.0% 7.3% .228 11 12 66.2 0.9
Carlos Carrasco 14 12 3.63 2.84 29.6% 5.9% .226 18 30 183.2 4.8

Smyly pitched alright during his season debut against the Blue Jays last Monday, but he still came away with the loss despite allowing just six runs in close to seven innings on the mound. Three of those hits happened to go over the wall for homers as Smyly also allowed five runs. He also struck out five and walked a hitter. He was scheduled to go on Saturday, but Mother Nature decided he'd be better of waiting a few more days to make his second start of the season.

Carlos Carrasco Scouting Report:

After being signed as an amateur free agent by the Phillies in 2003, Carrasco came to the Indians in the big Cliff Lee trade at the 2009 trade deadline. Carrasco has quietly emerged as one of the better starting pitchers in the league the past two years, as he was exceptional during the 2014 season and followed that up with another stellar year in 2015. His 2016 season however, has gotten off to a rocky start as the Red Sox found their long ball stroke against him last Wednesday as he allowed four runs on seven hits -- three homers -- while he walked a batter and struck out five over five innings of work.
