Game 18 Notes: Tampa Bay Rays vs New York Yankees

Can the Drew Smyly and the Rays avoid being swept?

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Rays are sending another southpaw to the mound today to follow up Blake Snell's stellar debut yesterday afternoon. They'll be out hoping avoid being swept by the Yankees if some defensive miscues and a rare bullpen lapse brought upon a walkoff victory for New York.

Today's Starting Pitchers:

W L ERA FIP K% BB% AVG BABIP HR GS IP fWAR
Drew Smyly 0 2 2.91 2.90 34.2% 5.1% .133 .156 3 3 21.2 0.5
Michael Pineda 1 1 5.29 4.09 24.0% 5.3% .286 .347 3 3 17 0.1

Over his 15 innings pitched, Drew Smyly has racked up 22 strikeouts, dominating his last time out against Boston. He didn't earn the victory, but that goes to show how meaningless win-loss numbers are as he delivered eight scoreless innings, only allowed a weak single, while he struck out 11 and walked two.

Michael Pineda Scouting Report:

Pineda had a lousy start to open the season, but has rebounded nicely his last two times out. After a three run, six inning effort against the Blue Jays, Pineda went six more innings this past Tuesday against the Athletics and gave up two runs on seven hits, while he struck out seven and walked just one batter resulting in a no-decision.
