Brad Boxberger made his highly anticipated return to a major league mound last night and after recording the first two outs in quick order, the wheels fell off and he ended up surrendering a two run homer to Kendrys Morales, and then drilled Paulo Orlando with a pitch before leaving as he re-aggravated his oblique.
The Rays bullpen has been struggling all season and Boxberger was supposed to provide some much needed relief for Erasmo Ramirez and Alex Colome as another high leverage, late inning guy, but now the duo will have to hold out for at least another two weeks.
Prior to tonight's game, the Rays re-placed Boxberger on the 15-day disabled list and they have promoted Tim Beckham back up to the majors. Beckham was optioned last week for Ryan Garton, however, Beckham's option won't be considered used as he spent less than 20 days in Durham.
Beckham is being promoted instead of a bullpen arm to serve as some back up middle infield depth as Steve Pearce has been dealing with a sore elbow. So far in 58 plate appearances this season, Beckham has hit .185/.241/.352 with two homers during 17 games.
