Game 68 Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs Cleveland Indians

The Rays hope to snap their losing funk in a city that's in a winning funk

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Rays were on a roll, and now they aren't.

That seems to be the pattern for the Rays, once they find a groove, something throws them off and they fall into a tangent.

Heading into play tonight, the Rays have lost four straight games, as their record has now dropped to 31-36, eight and a half games back in the AL East. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians are 38-30 and sit atop of the AL Central, having won their past three in a row.

*Side Note: It's Blake Snel''s fault as the Rays 0-5 with him on the roster and 31-31 with him off it

TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS:

2016 W L ERA FIP K% BB% AVG BABIP HR GS IP fWAR
Drew Smyly 2 7 4.75 4.16 27.7% 5.9% .243 .296 15 13 77.2 1.1
Josh Tomlin 8 1 3.27 4.38 16.5% 2.3% .257 .270 13 12 74.1 0.8

Drew Smyly finally regained his breaking pitches his last time out after struggling the entire month of May with them. Smyly would rack up 12 strikeouts, pitching two outs into the seventh inning. He would surrender two runs on four hits -- both runs came via a home run -- while he didn't walk anyone, picking up a no-decision.

Jose Tomlin Scouting Report:

Tomlin has quietly been very good this year, as he has allowed two earned runs or less over eight of his 12 starts. He has also averaged more than six innings a start this year, and he has pitched into the sixth inning in all but two starts. His last time out was on the 14th against the Royals where the lone run he gave up came via a solo homer. He would allow seven hits, walked none, and struck out five over seven innings of work, but ended up with a no-decision.
