There were quite a few bad results Wednesday, but tucked in there is a pretty encouraging start from Taylor Guerrieri. After last week's disaster against Biloxi, he really rebounded.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (36-45)
Jake Goebbert's 10th-inning single lifted Durham to a 3-2 win over Charlotte. After Mayo Acosta started the inning with a single, Johnny Field came on to pinch run. Juniel Querecuto's sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position, and Goebbert would drive him in with two outs. That was his third run driven in after singling home a pair in the sixth. Mark Sappington got the win despite allowing both Knights runs, and starter Jaime Schultz struck out three in four scoreless innings.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (5-1)
Taylor Guerrieri turned in perhaps his best start of the season in Montgomery's 5-4 win over Mobile. Coming off an outing in which he failed to get out of the first inning, he tied a career high with seven innings, and he only allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. After Willy Adames' sacrifice fly put the Biscuits up 1-0 in the first, Jake Bauers hit his ninth home run for a 2-0 edge. Kean Wong's three-run home run in the sixth was the difference.
Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (3-4)
Charlotte fell behind early and continued falling further behind in a 13-2 loss to St. Lucie. The Stone Crabs fell behind 10-0 before getting on the board, and they had to resort to two position players pitching for the final 2 2/3 innings. Edwin Fierro was charged with six runs in three-plus innings.
Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (2-5)
Bowling Green's pitching could not figure out a way to get Whitecaps hitters out in a 10-7 loss to West Michigan. With the exception of Zacrey Law's RBI due to being hit by a pitch in the ninth, the Hot Rods allowed at least a run following each half inning they scored themselves. RBI hits from Angel Moreno, Kevin Padlo and Kewby Meyer gave them a 5-2 lead in the fourth, but that quickly became an unmanageable deficit. Jose Mujica lasted just 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs, and Armando Bastardo and Bryan Bonnell provided no relief.
Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (4-9)
Hudson Valley was not competitive again in its 7-0 loss to Staten Island. Adrian Navas struck out six but allowed five runs -- three earned -- in 4 1/3 innings. The Renegades only had one more baserunner (four) than errors (three).
Rookie Princeton Rays (4-3)
Princeton was hammered by Greeneville by a 14-3 score. Bobby Melley's three-run home run in the fourth cut into Greeneville's 6-0 lead, but Princeton obviously could not get closer. Greeneville teed off on Princeton pitching for four home runs, including three off starter Resny Linares, who allowed six runs -- five earned -- in 3 2/3 innings.
Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (1-4)
The GCL Rays got on the board with a 4-1 win over the GCL Red Sox. Jesus Sanchez knocked in the first run with a single in the second, and they added on in the fifth. Jonathan Arrowood singled home a pair of runs, and he came home on Juan Carlos Arias' hit later in the inning. Jesus Ortiz started and struck out three in three scoreless innings, and the win went to Eduard Rosillo, who struck out six and allowed a run in three-plus frames.
