Rays prospects and minor leagues: Lowe adjusting to pro ball

After a slow start, first-rounder Joshua Lowe is settling in with the GCL Rays

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Joshua Lowe only had one hit in his first five games and two in his first 10. Since then, the third baseman, he has hits in seven of his last eight games, including an ongoing six-game hitting streak. Before that seven-game stretch, he was batting .067/.222/.100. He's now up to .200/.348/.333.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (44-54)

After blowing a 6-1 lead, Durham rebounded for a 10-inning, 7-6 win over Rochester. Steve Geltz was brought in to pitch the eighth, but he could not finish it before allowing five runs and would've been charged with more if he hadn't been bailed out by Casey Coleman. With two outs in the 10th, Dayron Varona singled home Casey Gillaspie for the go-ahead run, and Ryne Stanek locked down the bottom half of the inning to preserve the win. Starter Eddie Gamboa allowed just a run in six innings.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (14-11)

Montgomery was off.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (12-12)

Jacksonville product Sean Reid-Foley dominated Charlotte in the Stone Crabs' 2-0 loss to Dunedin. The Blue Jays prospect struck out 10 over six, one-hit innings, and Charlotte starter Jeff Howell was not quite as good, walking seven in three innings. All three of Charlotte's hits were singles.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-9)

Bowling Green was off.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (18-14)

Ryan Boldt drove in all three Hudson Valley runs in the Renegades' 3-2 win over Brooklyn. With two outs in the third, his RBI single tied the game at one, and he prevented the shutdown inning again in the fifth. His double scored Miles Mastrobuoni and Joe Olson, and only two Cyclones reached base over the final four innings. Starter Eduard Rosillo walked five and allowed a run in four innings, J.D. Busfield allowed a run in three innings, and Brandon Lawson struck out three over the final two frames.

Rookie Princeton Rays (15-9)

Princeton's 12 fourth-inning runs were sufficient in its 12-5 win over Burlington. Emilio Gustave was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the first run, but the next two batters make outs before the big breakout. Eleardo Cabrera cleared the bases with a double, and Rafelin Lorenzo, Adrian Rondon and Robbie Tenerowicz each had two-RBI hits in the inning. Starter Resly Linares was able to get the win despite allowing five runs in five innings.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (10-12)

There appears to be no larger narrative to use in describing the GCL Rays' 4-2 loss to the GCL Twins Tuesday. It seems to be the quintessential ordinary baseball game. Joshua Lowe's double in the first gave the GCL Rays a 1-0 lead, but they would not score again until a ninth-inning error when they were down 4-1. Starter Jesus Ortiz allowed two runs in 3 1/3 innings, and Anthony Parente also allowed two runs.
