Rays prospects and minor leagues: Cobb moves closer to majors

Alex Cobb takes his rehab to Durham

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Rays have a pretty robust contingent out on rehab assignments right now. Alex Cobb joined Matt Duffy with Durham, and Charlotte has Oswaldo Arcia and Logan Morrison at the moment.

Wednesday, the Red Scare hit his fourth home run with Charlotte. That's still not a ton of power for a corner outfielder, but he's a prospect if he makes contact, gets on-base and hits some balls to the gaps.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (53-65)

Alex Cobb took his rehab to another level in Durham's 5-3 loss to Pawtucket. After four appearances with Charlotte, Cobb moved up a couple levels and struggled out of the gate. RBI singles from Curt Casali and Daniel Robertson spotted him a 2-0 lead, but Pawtucket evened the score in the bottom of the first. Cobb allowed solo home runs in the second and third innings and finished with four runs allowed on eight hits in three frames with four strikeouts and no walks. Nice relief work from Eddie Gamboa kept the Bulls in the game, but J.P. Arencibia's solo home run was not enough. Matt Duffy was 0-for-4.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (25-20)

Montgomery was off.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (24-20)

Nathan Lukes hit his first home run with his new organization in Charlotte's 5-1 win over Jupiter in Game 1 of their doubleheader. The outfielder, acquired in last month's Brandon Guyer trade, had not reached base in his first 14 plate appearances with the Stone Crabs before his second-inning single. In the third, he went deep, as did fellow outfielder Joe McCarthy. They were aided by rehabbers Oswaldo Arcia and Logan Morrison, who each had a hit. Benton Moss struck out seven in his seven-inning complete game.

A former Rays prospect had the last laugh in Charlotte's 2-1 loss in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Matt Ramsey, who was traded to the Marlins in 2014 to help the Rays sign Adrian Rondon, pitched the final inning and got credited with the win on his rehab assignment with the Hammerheads. Starter Henry Centeno tossed three scoreless innings, and both Jeff Howell and Nick Sawyer allowed a run out of the bullpen. Arcia suited up for the Stone Crabs again and singled and walked as their DH.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (30-14)

Bowling Green was off.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (30-20)

Hudson Valley was postponed.

Rookie Princeton Rays (24-21)

Still without Adrian Rondon, Princeton battled for a 3-1 win over Burlington Wednesday. Joshua Lowe led off the fifth with a single and scored the tying run on Deion Tansel's two-out hit, and Princeton took the lead on the eighth when Oscar Rojas' two-out double scored Blake Butera and Eleardo Cabrera. After starter Jose Disla allowed a run in four innings, Brian McAfee and Dalton Moats combined for five scoreless innings of relief.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (17-23)

The GCL Rays used one big inning to earn a 5-0 win over the GCL Red Sox. Neither offense could get anything going through the first 5 1/2 innings, particularly the GCL Rays, who did not get a hit until Moises Gomez's sixth-inning leadoff single. Jesus Sanchez later started the scoring with a bases-loaded single, and another run scored on a walk before Michael Brosseau cleared the bases with a three-run double. Starter Austin Franklin, the team's third-round pick, was sharp with five scoreless innings, but the win went to Tyler House, who had two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
