Following last night’s loss to the Texas Rangers, the Tampa Bay Rays announced they’d be placing Nick Franklin on the seven day concussion disabled list.
This afternoon, the team selected Richie Shaffer from Triple-A Durham to take Franklin’s place on the roster, while they also activated Enny Romero from the disabled list and optioned Ryan Garton to Triple-A Durham.
This will be Shaffer’s second stint with the Rays this season. He was optioned to Durham just 10 days ago by the Rays after playing in just three games, recording two hits in seven trips to the plate. Shaffer hit .223/.325/.355 this season thus far in Durham with 10 home runs.
Ryan Garton has struggled since his return to the Rays at the beginning of August. In eight games this month, he has allowed six runs on 12 hits over 11 innings pitched. Enny Romero hit the disabled list with a strained back on August 6th. So far this year, Romero has struggled mightily with his control while he's struggled to strikeout opposing hitters.
Garton will likely rejoin the Rays in September when rosters expand. Shaffer will fill in the outfield, and at first base while Brad Miller will likey head back to short for the time being until Nick Franklin returns.
