Rays prospects and minor leagues 9/6: Jake DePew homers, pitches in Montgomery’s win

Rookie-level Princeton and Triple-A Durham’s seasons are finished

Jim Donten

After Durham’s season finale, the Rays promoted Mikie Mahtook, Richie Shaffer and Steve Geltz and selected Justin Marks from the Bulls. They also promoted Chase Whitley from Double-A Montgomery and designated Hank Conger for assignment.

With Princeton’s elimination from the playoffs, no games are on tap for the Rays’ affiliates today. Montgomery, Bowling Green, and Hudson Valley start their playoffs Wednesday.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (64-80)

Durham finished their 2016 with a 7-1 loss to the Norfolk Tides. Austin Pruitt struck out eight but gave up three runs on eight hits as he ended the season 8-11. Brad Schreiber and Tyler Sturdevant each allowed two-run home runs in relief. Durham’s lone run came on a solo home run from Casey Gillaspie in the fourth inning, as he ends the season with 18 home runs between Double and Triple-A.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (42-28)

Montgomery bounced back from their ugly loss Sunday in a 6-2 win over Tennessee Smokies. Jared Mortensen held the Smokies scoreless in his five innings, striking out three as he yielded four hits and a walk. Jake DePew and Thomas Coyle hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth to put the Biscuits up 3-0. DePew later homered, and along with a RBI double from Jake Bauers and ensuing error, Montgomery went up by six. DePew also pitched two-thirds of an inning to oust a ninth-inning rally.

Class-A Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (64-71)

Charlotte’s season is finished.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (47-23)

Bowling Green picked up one more blowout win before the regular season ended as they notched a 13-2 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The Hot Rods plated eight runs in the second, with Landon Cray and Kewby Meyer each hitting three-run home runs. Bowling Green collected five more runs in the next two innings to give them a huge lead. Roel Ramirez kept Fort Wayne off the board through six innings, but he allowed a run in the seventh and was promptly removed. Thanks to the large lead, Ramirez received his seventh win.

Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (47-27)

Hudson Valley wrapped up their season with a quiet 2-0 loss to the Aberdeen Ironbirds. The Renegades used six different pitchers as they looked to preserve their rotation before the playoffs start. Luis Nunez took the loss as he allowed the only two runs of the game in the fourth. Hudson Valley managed just four hits, with 19th-round pick Jim Haley tallying two, including a double.

Rookie Princeton Rays (1-2)

Princeton was eliminated from the Appalachian League playoffs after a 4-3 walk-off loss to the Burlington Royals. The Rays scored first with a two-run home run from Deion Tansel. However, Burlington got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, with one run being charged to Peter Bayer and one unearned run being charged to Alex Estrella. Eleardo Cabrera hit a RBI single to give Princeton a brief one-run lead before Estrella allowed another unearned run. The damning blow came in the bottom of the ninth, as Dalton Moats allowed a double and single to end Princeton’s season.

Rookie GCL Rays (28-31)

The GCL Rays’ season is finished.
