Rays unveil new Spring Training alternate cap for 2017

The Tampa Bay Rays have unveiled a third alternate cap to be worn during Spring Training in 2017, featuring the light-burst logo as the team’s symbol. All three caps feature the same logo in different color iterations.

The team Batting Practice cap is a navy hat with a Columbia blue brim, and was used during Spring Training in 2016 alongside new Columbia blue jerseys with the same logo.

An inverse of the batting practice cap, with a navy brim and Columbia top, has also been available in the team store.

The new Spring Training cap for 2017 features Columbia blue throughout with a white panel at the front, which is more in line with last season’s Spring uniform.

The new caps are expected to go on sale today at MLBshop.com. Rays team stores in the Tampa Bay area will have “stretch versions” of this cap available (New Era 3930’s), and are expecting to receive the authentic versions (5950’s) in the next week.

Tampa Bay is also expected to return the alternate “faux-back” uniforms in 2017, which also utilize a different colored front panel, and include a lowercase “tb” logo with an orange slice. There are several variations of this uniform, with this season’s expected to be Columbia blue with gold-yellow sleeves. Regardless of the uniform, the hat is relatively unchanged.

The Rays wore a fifth alternate cap last season on Pride Night to honor of the victims of the Orlando mass shooting. The cap was a retro Orlando Rays hat, previously worn by a team Double-A affiliate, which has since moved to Montgomery, AL.
