The Legend of Sam Fuld may be on the way back to the Rays as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports the team has kept in contact in their former fan-favorite outfielder (along with several other teams).
#Rays are among several teams keeping in contact with free-agent OF Sam Fuld, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, and eager to play.— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) February 9, 2017
Fuld, 35, missed all of the 2016 season after undergoing shoulder surgery, having last played in the majors during 2015 for the Oakland Athletics where he was just barely above replacement level with 0.2 fWAR, however, he did accrue 2.9 fWAR during the 2014 season.
If it wasn’t for Sam Fuld’s stellar beginning to the 2011 season, the Rays likely would not have been able to make it to the playoffs the season as his all out style of play in the outfield and surprising offensive outburst seemingly served as a rallying cry for a team and fanbase that had been brutalized by the early stages of the season.
If the Rays do bring in Fuld, he’d add to their growing list of outfield depth the team has been accumulating since early January. He is a major league veteran of eight seasons and over his career he has slashed .227/.307/.325 with 12 HR, 79 wRC+, and a total of 5.1 fWAR.
