Rays Game MVP Recap: Week 2

Week 2 brings 2 game balls for 2 new faces

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Two weeks of baseball down already. How did that happen? You voted for MVPs of the two games the Rays won over the last week. Let’s take a look at who will get those game balls.

If you need a refresher on the process, check out the primer article for this series here.

The Polls

Steven Souza Jr. has been on some kind of hot streak these first few weeks of the season, as we mentioned here. He also had 2 walks in this game, one of them ending in a slide into second base that led to some chirping back and forth with Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Souza got the last laugh.

Logan Morrison picked up his first career grand slam in this win, and he did it against the reigning Cy Young winner Rick Porcello. Porcello got dinged up in the game by a lot of Rays hitters, but LoMo had the dingest of dingers, and WPA agrees he contributed the most to the win.

The Results

This week we add two new faces to the game ball leader board. We now have a six way tie, as no one has yet to be voted in for a second award. I imagine that will change soon.

Chris Archer - 1

Alex Cobb - 1

Alex Colome - 1

Mallex Smith - 1

Steven Souza Jr. - 1

Logan Morrison - 1

So now two of the top 3 hitters by fWAR have a game ball, but Corey Dickerson has still yet to haul one in. He probably would have had a good shot at one today, going 2-4 with a home run and an outfield assist, but the overtaxed Rays bullpen couldn’t hold the lead against the Boston Red Sox in the 5-7 loss.

Thanks again to everyone that voted. If you want to get involved, hop on twitter, follow @draysbay and look for polls after every Rays win.
