After a midseason promotion to Charlotte last season, Jake Cronenworth struggled. He batted just .171 with twice as many strikeouts as walks. He's now getting a second shot at the Florida State League, and the early results are promising. He had just 19 hits in 126 plate appearances in 2016, and he already has 18 in 47 this season. He has seven walks and seven strikeouts.
Triple-A Durham Bulls (7-4)
Durham was off.
Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (6-5)
Mike Franco and three relievers shut out Jackson in Montgomery's 1-0 win over the Generals. Franco was in and out of trouble his entire outing, but he was able to complete 5 2/3 scoreless frames before handing the game over to the bullpen. Kyle Bird, Diego Castillo and Kyle Winkler combined to keep Jackson off the scoreboard over the final 3 1/3 innings. With two runners in scoring position in the fifth, Riley Unroe laid down a bunt single to score Joe McCarthy.
Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (3-9)
Charlotte rallied a couple times in its 6-4 win over Daytona. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Kevin Padlo drove in two runs with a two-out double, but the Tortugas fought back with two of their own in the seventh. In the eighth, Jake Cronenworth and Brandon Lowe started another rally with back-to-back singles. Padlo's sacrifice fly tied the game, and Dalton Kelly drove in what proved to be the winning run with a double. Starter Blake Bivens allowed a pair of runs on eight hits in five innings with five strikeouts and a walk.
Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (6-5)
Bowling Green's bats took a second straight day off in a 1-0 loss to Lake County. The Hot Rods actually outhit the Captains by a 6-3 margin, but they were unable to cash in any opportunities. The only run of the game came in the sixth with two outs. After a runner went from first to third on a wild pitch, starter Adrian Navas allowed a two-out single. Navas allowed just a run in six innings despite walking six batters.
