Down on the Farm 5/1: Rehabbers rehabbed, prospects prospected

Mallex Smith and Colby Rasmus look ready to return

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Mallex Smith and Colby Rasmus had good nights on their rehab assignments. That’s an encouraging sign as we could see both of them with the big league club soon. Clay Davenport has Willy Adames at +5 runs on defense at shortstop so far on the season. Justin Marks and Ryne Stanek continue their quest for a spot in the Rays bullpen. Nick Ciuffo and Brandon Lowe keep hitting for extra bases.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (16-7)

Outside of the bullpen, there weren’t many notably strong performances for the Durham Bulls in their 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Bisons on Sunday. Brent Honeywell cruised through 3 innings of work before getting roughed up in the 4th enough to be pulled early from the game. Willy Adames was the only player to reach base safely more than once. Mallex Smith contributed the only extra base hit with a double in his what you could call an extended rehab assignment. Justin Marks and Ryne Stanek were the bright spots in the pen, combining for 7 strikeouts and only one hit in 4 innings of work.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (13-10)

Everyone contributed to the Biscuits 5-1 win over the Birmingham Barons on Sunday. Montgomery immediately took the lead in the first inning when Joe McCarthy doubled in the rehabbing Colby Rasmus from first base, showing Rasmus has the wheels going and should be ready to return to the Rays. If that wasn’t enough, he added a 410 foot home run in the third inning. Nick Ciuffo also hit a home run, his first of the season, to add to his team-leading extra-base-hit total. The team combined for 7 XBH in the game. On the pitching side, Jose Mujica twirled 7 innings of 1 run ball in 91 pitches. Fireballers Jose Alvarado and Diego Castillo locked down the win with an inning each of scoreless relief.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (9-14)

The Charlotte Stone Crabs tried to come back in the 8th inning but fell short to the Bradenton Marauders 4-2. Jake Cronenworth extended his hitting streak to 24 games, Brandon Lowe collected two more doubles, and Kevin Padlo reached base safely twice. Lowe is slashing a pretty incredible .368/.469/.588/1.057 almost a month into the season.

Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods (10-12)

The Bowling Green game was postponed due to rain.

Click here for today’s match up information. Looks like just two games with Durham and Bowling Green taking the day off.
