Rays prospects and minor leagues: De Leon makes Durham debut

After a couple rehab outings with Charlotte, Jose De Leon moved up to Triple A Tuesday

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Jake Bauers got off to a slow start in April, but so far, his May has been what people expect from him. He's batting .324 with a .439 on-base percentage and slugging .559. He has just 15 strikeouts and has walked 14 times. His four home runs are tied for a career best in any month in his career.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (28-15)

One rough inning cost Jose De Leon in his Durham debut, a 4-0 loss to Rochester. After a 1-2-3 first, the first two Red Wings reached base in the second and scored on a two-run double, and a pair of two-out hits expanded the visitors' lead to four runs. He allowed four runs in four innings, but Yonny Chirinos was impressive in piggyback duty, striking out four over four one-hit frames. The Bulls managed just six hits.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (19-24)

Charlotte's return to the big field ended in a 7-2 loss to Daytona. After the netting behind home plate caused problems over the last several days, the Stone Crabs were able to return to their normal confines Tuesday. In a rehab assignment, Tommy Hunter struck out three but allowed two runs in an inning. Down 2-0, they tied the game in the second. Ryan Boldt bunted in a run and scored on Jake Fraley's single, but Eduar Lopez could not preserve the newly tied game. He allowed a two-run homer in the third and finished with five runs allowed in 5 2/3 innings.

OF Ryan Boldt: 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 K
OF Jake Fraley: 2-for-3, 1 RBI

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (18-25)

Rene Pinto's home run was not enough offense in Bowling Green's 4-1 loss to South Bend in 10 innings. His second homer of the season gave the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead in the second, and they had another chance to score later in the inning. Adrian Rondon doubled, but he was thrown out at home trying to score on Eleardo Cabrera's single. They really wouldn't threaten again the rest of the night. On the mound, a trio of pitchers all made their 2017 debut. Willy Ortiz allowed an unearned run in three innings, Spencer Moran struck out four in four innings, and Orlando Romero was charged with three unearned runs in three frames.
