Prior to tonight’s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels, the Tampa Bay Rays announced that they had placed Diego Moreno on the 10-day DL with right shoulder bursitis. In his place, the Rays have recalled Ryan Garton from Triple-A Durham.
Moreno made his return to the majors after spending the entire 2016 season in the minor leagues. Kevin Cash had used him very sparingly since his promotion at the beginning of the month as he has only pitched in five games. After a rough couple of outings to begin his Rays tenure, Moreno has put together three consecutive scoreless outings.
Ryan Garton has already made one stop with the Rays thus far in 2017, and has allowed three runs on five hits over three appearances. However, he has dominated in Durham this year in 12 appearances, striking out over 40% of opposing hitters and he has allowed just one run on seven hits over 15 innings pitched.
Garton’s stay in the majors may be temporary though as Tommy Hunter pitched in his first rehab game last night for the Charlotte Stone Crabs and according to Marc Topking of the Tampa Bay Times, he could rejoin the club very soon and may not make a second rehab appearance.
