Rays prospects and minor leagues: Honeywell sharp in Durham win

Brent Honeywell was much better than his last time out

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Jesus Sanchez hit his fifth home run, which leads all Rays minor leaguers. Mike Marjama is next up with four.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (20-7)

Brent Honeywell rebounded from a rough outing in Durham's 1-0 win over Norfolk. After allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings last time out, Honeywell was in fine form Saturday, dominating the Tides. Except for an occasional runner in scoring position, he was never in trouble in his 5 1/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. In the sixth inning, the Bulls got the only run they needed when Kean Wong's double put runners in scoring position, allowing Willy Adames to score on an error.

1B Casey Gillaspie: 0-for-3, 1 BB, 1 K
SS Willy Adames: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 K
OF Mallex Smith: 0-for-5, 2 K

RHP Brent Honeywell: 5 1/3 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (14-14)

Montgomery's comeback came up short in its 4-3 loss to Biloxi. The Shuckers had back-to-back two-run innings in the second and third against Jose Mujica, who allowed all four runs -- three earned -- in six innings. In the fifth, Andrew Velazquez's home run -- just his second in the organization -- got the Biscuits on the board. Cade Gotta tripled and scored in the seventh and drove in their third run an inning later.

Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (12-15)

Bowling Green just didn't have enough offense in its 12-inning, 3-2 loss to Beloit. Jesus Sanchez did hit his fifth home run of the season, and Miles Mastrobuoni drove in the Hot Rods' second run. That eighth-inning single was their last hit of the night. Starter Peter Bayer allowed a run and struck out five in five innings.
