Rays prospects and minor leagues: So many extra base hits

Each team had some exciting performances on offense

MLB: Spring Training-New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Leonard led the way with his third home run and eighth double, Nick Ciuffo continues his offensive breakout as he smacked his third home run of the season, and a trio of Hot Rods collected three hits a piece.

Triple-A Durham Bulls (20-8)

If I told you the Bulls posted 5 extra base hits, 7 singles and 5 walks, how many runs would you guess they put up? Somehow that came out to only 3 runs over 12 innings as they lost to the Norfolk Tides 3-4. There were some pretty great performances, but apparently they weren’t strung together enough. Patrick Leonard had a home run and a double, Casey Gillaspie and Jake Hager reached base safely four times, and Mallex Smith reached three times. Ryan Yarbrough was solid in his start of 5.1 innings, collecting 6 strikeouts while giving up 2 runs (1 earned). Eventual Rays relievers Chih-Wei Hu and Ryne Stanek combined for 5 strikeouts, 1 hit and no walks in 2.1 innings of relief.

Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (15-14)

The Biscuits also went into extra innings on Sunday, taking one from Biloxi 6-4 in 10 innings. A Joe McCarthy single, Michael Russell double and Nathan Lukes single was enough to secure the win in extras. Braxton Lee kept his hot hitting going from the leadoff spot with 2 singles and a walk, while Nick Ciuffo, Cade Gotta and Grant Kay all smacked solo home runs. Fire baller Diego Castillo picked up the win in his 3 innings of 1 hit relief.

Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (14-16)

The Stone Crabs tried to come back in the 9th inning, but ended up dropping one to Tampa 3-4. Down by one with a man on first and third with two outs, the hot hitting Jake Cronenworth came into the game as a pinch hitter to try to at least tie things up, but he ended up flying out to left field to end the rally. David Olmedo-Barerra and Brett Sullivan each hit their first home runs of the season, while Ryan Boldt stayed hot with a 2 hit performance. Genesis Cabrera went 5 innings giving up only one run, but allowed 4 hits and 4 walks in the process.

Bowling Green broke open the scoring and never looked back as they beat Beloit 6-2. Adrian Navas and Kenny Rosenberg went 5 and 4 innings respectively and tallied 14 strike outs without issuing a walk in the process. Michael Brosseau had himself a night as he fell a triple shy of the cycle. Jesus Sanchez reached base safely three times, while Miles Mastrobuoni and Lucius Fox also accomplished the feat.
