Prior to tonight’s game against the Kansas City Royals, the Tampa Bay Rays have announced that they have selected the contract of Diego Moreno from Triple-A Durham and have optioned Austin Pruitt off the active roster to make space. Meanwhile, Justin Marks who was designated for assignment on Saturday, has been claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Diego Moreno signed a minor league deal with the Rays this past off-season with an invite to spring training, where he impressed the Rays brass.
“Moreno has looked outstanding this entire spring. He's pretty intriguing with a fastball/changeup combination. It's a power arm that throws a changeup well and throws it repeatedly and guys don't seem to make adjustments on it. It creates a lot of depth.'' - Kevin Cash
Moreno has spent the majority of his career with the Pirates organization, but his only major league experience comes from a brief stint with the Yankees in 2015 where he pitched in four games. So far this year for the Durham Bulls, Moreno has been stellar allowing just two runs over 16 innings pitched.
Austin Pruitt put a rough start to his major league career behind him as he emerged as a solid long relief pitcher out of the pen for Kevin Cash.
