Wilson Ramos is getting closer and closer to joining the Rays.
Last night, Wilson Ramos played his first game with the Durham Bulls, having already played several games with the Charlotte Stone Crabs.
During his first plate appearance, Ramos made his presence known as he blasted a hanging breaking ball deep into the left field seats. It was such a mighty blast that the Columbus Clippers left fielder took two steps before just stopping to admire the beautiful arc.
The Rays surprisingly snagged Ramos this past off-season to a two year deal. The veteran catcher was ticketed for a larger payday, but a torn ACL suffered just days before the season’s conclusion ended those thoughts. After undergoing surgery, Ramos signed with the Rays and has been rehabbing the injury since.
Once Ramos is ready to be activated, the Rays will have several decisions to make as Ramos will require a spot on the 40-man roster as he’ll be coming off the 60-day DL. The Rays will also have to decide whether or not they’ll carry three catchers on the roster as Ramos will likely relegated DH duties and occasional time behind the plate.
As of now, the date that the Rays and Wilson Ramos are targeting for his return is June 25th.
