Rays vs Tigers Preview: Let’s play four in Detroit

The Rays kick off a four-game set at Comerica Park in downtown Detroit

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Rays (35-33) are coming off a series spit with the Toronto Blue Jays and will look to build on an impressive 7-1-2 series record over their last 10 series.

The Tigers (30-34) currently sit in 3rd place in the AL Central standings and will be looking to bounce back after dropping two games to the Arizona Diamondbacks at home.

Tonight’s game will be televised on Fox Sports Sun. First pitch is slated for 7:10 PM ET.

Starting Pitchers

Alex Cobb

The right-hander allowed one run on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five in Friday's 13-4 win over the A's. He pounded the strike zone, throwing 65 of 96 pitches for strikes resulting in just his fourth quality start of the year.

Cobb (5-5) boasts a 4.29 ERA in 79.2 innings heading into tonight’s game.

The veteran has faired poorly vs. RHB’s and adequately vs. LHB’s, posting a .294/.333/.471 slash-line from the right side of the plate and .261/.340/.415 from the left side of the plate.

For his career, he is 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA in five starts against Detroit including a 1-0 win on August 21, 2014 when he defeated David Price.

This will be Cobb’s 100th start of his career, becoming the seventh pitcher in team history to make 100 starts.

Justin Verlander

The former Cy Young Award winner will be making his 14th start of the season tonight against the Rays.

Overall, Verlander has had mix results so far this year posting a 4-4 record with a 4.68 ERA through 75 innings.

The veteran has struggled with command in 2017, boasting a 69/37 K/BB ratio which makes it difficult to work deep into games after racking up such high pitch counts.

The right-hander has faired poorly vs. RHB’s and adequately vs. LHB’s, posting a .283/.356/.421 slash-line from the right side of the plate and .224/.324/.408 from the left side of the plate.

Verlander is making his 16th start against the Rays and is 8-3 with a 3.34 ERA against them.
