Rays prospects and minor leagues: McKay okay in college playoffs

Rays first round draft pick contributed on both sides of the ball to a playoff win on Sunday

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Louisville vs Texas A&M Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Brendan McKay went 5+ innings for Louisville on the mound, and 1-5 at the plate. As a hitter, he didn’t strike out at all, but did leave six runners on base. As a pitcher, only two of his eight hits allowed went for extra bases (both doubles), and he struck out six batters. By most accounts, he pitched better than the box score suggests.

(41-27) Bulls [AAA] Lost 6 to 5

The Durham Bulls pitchers just couldn’t put the baseball in the strike zone when they needed to in their 6-5 loss to Toledo. All five Durham pitchers allowed at least one free pass, and Hunter Wood gave up three of them in his first AAA start. On offense, Jake Bauers had himself a night, getting on base 4 times and collecting two extra base hits. His only out was a “sharp line out” to first base in the first inning, and he caught one of two line drives hit his way in right field. Curt Casali and manager Jared Sandberg were ejected in the bottom of the 8th inning after a base runner stole second base on Casali.

Jake Bauers 3-4, 2 2B (16), BB, hitting .275

Patrick Leonard 1-4, BB, K, hitting .288

Mike Marjama 2-3, BB, hitting .297

Shane Peterson 1-3, HR (10), K, hitting .281

Hunter Wood 3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 10.80 ERA

Diego Castillo 1.2 IP, BB, 3 K, 3.24 ERA

Brad Boxberger 1.0 IP, H, BB, 2 K, 0.00 ERA

Ryne Stanek 1.1 IP, H, R/ER, 2 BB, K, 2.21 ERA

Adam Kolarek 0.2 IP, 2 H, R/ER, BB, 1.48 ERA

(37-33) Biscuits [AA] Lost 6 to 3

The Biscuits tied the game at 2-2 in the third inning, but let Mississippi score again immediately after and couldn’t catch up. Montgomery’s batters played small ball all night as only one of their seven hits went for extra bases, a triple by Michael Russell in the top of the sixth inning that would result in a run. The Biscuits may have run into a few outs on the base path in the top of the third when Justin Williams hit into a fielder’s choice 1-5-2-6-2 double play.

Joe McCarthy 1-4, 2 K, hitting .300

Riley Unroe 1-4, K, hitting .235

Cade Gotta 0-3, BB, 3 K, hitting .318

Justin Williams 1-4, 2 K, hitting .307

Justin O'Conner 0-4, 2 K, hitting .246

Michael Russell 1-4, 3B (2), hitting .236

Nathan Lukes 1-3, BB, K, hitting .261

Mac James 1-3, BB, catcher interference, hitting .293

The Class A-Advanced Stone Crabs had the day off to wrap up the Florida State League All-Star weekend, and the Class A Hot Rods game was rained out, because they don’t live that dome life.

Go to this MLBfarm page for all of yesterday’s Rays organization box scores, and then this milb page to check out today’s matchups. Looks like its #HoneyDay in Durham, Montgomery is off, the Stone Crabs have a double header, and the Short Season Hudson Valley Renegades get their season started.
