We are now in week 12 of the 2017 major league baseball season and thus far, it has been a season of ups and downs for numerous teams as winning streaks and losing streaks play havoc with the current division and wild card standings.

Currently, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are tied for the lead in the American League East, while also being in control of the first Wild Card spot. The Tampa Bay Rays meanwhile are in sole possession of the second Wild Card spot, holding a slim half-game lead over the Minnesota Twins.

Pretty much every team in the American League is still in contention in the Wild Card race as the team that is furthest back is the Oakland Athletics at four and half games back. Speaking of the Athletics, they just swept the Yankees over four games in Oakland.

The Yankees have hit a brick wall last week as they just could not win any ball games. They are currently mired in a six game losing streak, which has allowed the Red Sox to catch them in the division. Meanwhile, the rest of the American League East has caught back up as well with the Blue Jays trailing in last place, just five and a half games behind.

If the season ended right now, the five playoff teams from the American League would be the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros.
